  • The move summary (in 2010) wrote, "moved Propionate to Propanoate over redirect: Propanoic acid is more common and systematic, while propionic acid is old usage and should not be used even if it is how propane is named." (I have no info or opinion.) Dekimasuよ! 21:27, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. It doesn't really matter too much to me one way or another, but a Google search shows that the common names "propionate" and "propionic" are indeed much more frequently used than the systematic names "propanoate" and "propanoic". The claim that "propionic acid is old usage and should not be used" is not consistent with WP:MOSCHEM or with WP:COMMONNAME. On Wikipedia, common names are frequently used preferentially over systematic names for chemical compounds. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:00, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Move to propionic etc. I favor moving to the more common names. --Smokefoot (talk) 22:34, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, absent WP:COMMONNAME evidence clearly establishing the current names as preferable. This should have been listed at RM in the section for speedy reversal of undiscussed, controverted moves.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  11:14, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion to merge this article with the one for Propionic acid edit

Propionate is not a substance, only the ion formed by the deprotonation of propionic acid. As such, the value of a separate article is limited and is not how many other organic acids are treated (for example citric acid and citrate, hexanoic acid and hexanoate. A discussion is underway at WT:WikiProject_Chemicals#Carboxylic_acids_vs_carboxylate_anion/esters suggesting that this and similar articles be merged with their parent acid. For propionate specifically, a mock-up of what the new article might look like has been created in my sandbox "here".. Please comment at WT:WikiProject_Chemicals#Carboxylic_acids_vs_carboxylate_anion/esters if you have views on this proposal. Michael D. Turnbull (talk) 11:56, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Done The merge of the article content is complete, leaving this page as a redirect. The reference to its Chemicals class as a mid-importance stub has been removed. Michael D. Turnbull (talk) 13:06, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
