There is something about Primus Stoves, and indeed Optimus Stoves and the many similar designed Paraffin stoves that I have come across that Is so much more satisfying to use than the horrid discount store "Aerosol Stoves" that you can get anywhere nowadays. I first encountered the Primus on a School camp in the 70's. We were divided into small troops of 8 to go into the forest and set up camp. Along with the scooter tents and rucksacks, we were issued small Primus stoves, complete with the original battered tin box to store it, a spanner and a stopper to remove the burner for storage and bung the hole, the three stands that support the pan, a packet of Meta Fuel to heat the burner and a "Pricker" to clear the jets when they were sooted up. The latter of which was the source of endless giggling from the back of the class every time it was mentioned, and of course some Paraffin. Whether or not I would immediately provide 12 year old's with a Paraffin stove today is debatable, yet I can't recall any incidents of a human torch out in the woods back then. After years of promising myself to get one, I bought two large Optimus stoves from Ebay. They work of course, they really work well and they are my prized possessions. Drawbacks edit
A drawback of the primus stove is that the fine hole through which the pressurized vapour issues can become blocked. The hole or nozzle can be cleared with a fine wire. Usually the same shop that sells the primus stove will all sell a supply of these "prickers". If the jet is blocked and you do not have a "pricker" available, the stove will not function satisfactorily if it functions at all. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 21:23, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Pints? edit
The capacity of the tank is given in pints, and it should be expressed in cc. Are these US or British pints? Is it important for such a small quantity? gpeterw (talk) 11:51, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
- The Primus No 1 was manufactured in the early 20thC in Europe with a European and UK target market. I've therefore assumed imperial pints and plugged them into {{convert}} accordingly. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:42, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
