What?

Quote from article: There are different causes for this phenomenon. On one hand a smaller number of the faithful leads automatically to a reduced count of those in priesthood, because these can only come from those who are faithful. This is predominantly the case in Western countries.

• A smaller number of faithful would require fewer priests, this would not create a shortage. The number of Catholics per priests has been increasing, suggesting other factors are at work. Also statistics show number of Catholics has increased.

Should this article only mention the Catholic Church? The article Church of England parish church refer to here and says: "However, by the late 20th and early 21st century, with the decline in the number of worshippers and the shortage of Anglican priests, there has been a trend towards team or shared ministry and many parish churches no longer have a service every Sunday."

This article relates to the shortage of priests in the RCC: too few priests for the number of church members. In other denominations, the problem tends to be that there are enough priests or ministers for the number of church members, but that these members are spread too thinly across a large number of churches. No longer viable career path for pedophiles?

Has anyone done a study on what effect the church's recent crackdown on pedophile priests has had on vocations? With all the suspicions, it has to be a lot tougher for them to get adequate access to children. Though the magnitude of the effect would depend on what percentage of the priesthood they ordinarily comprise, discouraging men who like young boys from entering the priesthood would likely have some negative effect on numbers.
