Captions to pictures and use of 'up' and 'down' edit

The caption to the first of the old pictures of coal trains passing through the station would seem to need amendment: the other two pictures show empty coal trains passing up the valley; the first shows what is clearly a full train coming down the valley. The text to the picture also requires amendment.

I am assuming that up /down here would refer to up and down the valley. An old TVR timetable that I have seen reproduced adopts this usage. But on the other hand I have also come across the convention of referring to any line leading away from London as the 'down' line.

Whichever convention is to be adopted, clearly it is not consistent for all three trains to be described as 'up' trains.Ntmr (talk) 00:57, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Up isn't necessarily towards London; it's normally towards the mileage zero point of the line. However, the Valley Lines are an exception; according to

the Down line is towards Barry and Cardiff, and the Up line is towards Aberdare, Merthyr or Treherbert. Similarly, on the Rhymney line, Up is towards Rhymney. A consequence of this is that through Cardiff Central, the designations on both the South Wales Main Line and the Valley Lines are consistent: Up is towards the east, Down is to the west. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:44, 5 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for that clarification. So it would seem to me that the caption on the first of three pictures needs correction. Do others agree?Ntmr (talk) 17:50, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
