Significance of Philadelphia Canoe Club: Though an outdoor activity club, the organization has a prominent position within the paddling community, being either the 2nd or 3rd oldest such organization in the nation. The club is a major training ground for new canoeists and kayakers and its location in a major urban center affords it significant stature in the outdoor sports scene. Philadelphia Canoe Club has produced several Olympians over the years including participants in the 1936, 1952, 1956 and 1972 games. The club is also the repository of several excellent examples of wooden canoes and kayaks on display in the clubhouse, itself a structure of significance in the city of Philadelphia. On display is a restored 34-foot 1911 Old Town War Canoe, one of only a handful still in existence in the world. The clubhouse is open to the public during meetings held the third Monday every month at 7:00 p.m.
