Infidelity to the marriage bed edit

I remember reading about a 1927 libel case and this phrase "completely vindicated the high moral character of the late Mr. W. E. Gladstone".

Wasn't this the case in which one of Gladstone's sons, who was a clergyman, testified that his dad had confessed to him that he had never "committed the act of infidelity to the marriage bed" or words to that effect? Historians have commented on the element of ambiguity in the phrasing - maybe he felt that, like Jimmy Carter, he had "committed adultery in his heart" during his eccentric antics with fallen women or his flirtatious friendships with society ladies. However, he presumably never actually had physical sex with anybody apart from his wife.Paulturtle (talk) 23:09, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
