Unreferenced Books edit

Some earlier editor (I can't be bothered to find who and when) seems to have taken the list of publications from Marlow's website. They share some oddities:

  • Europe on the dark side of the stars. France: Secours Populaire Francais, 1992.
    • Is this related to the exhibition "L'Europe... de l'autre côté des étoiles"? (See for example this.) But if, so, was that ever turned into a book, or even a booklet?
  • Underground. France: Cahiers de Cinema, 1995.
    • Nothing resembling this at Worldcat (April 2015). Marlow's own website says that this has ISBN 2-8642-164-7, but this is invalid.
  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Italy: Arte, 1998.
    • Hard to find this at WorldCat, which has nothing for "Dichiarazione universale dei diritti umani" published 1997-1999.
  • March 30 to August 05. A limited edition on the conversion of Gainsborough Studios for the Almeida Theatre, UK, 2000.
    • A limited edition what? Anyway, not in Worldcat (April 2015).
  • The Shape of a Pocket (with John Berger). London: Bloomsbury, 2001.
    • The OCLC record doesn't mention Marlow. Instead, this seems to be by Berger alone, though Marlow might have had some input. Any comment from somebody who's seen the book? (I'd imagine that many people will be familiar with it.)

(This adds up to a sizable percentage of what's listed. I hasten to point out that some of the rest aren't just unquestionable, they're unquestionably noteworthy, eg Liverpool: Looking out to sea.) -- Hoary (talk) 02:25, 5 April 2015 (UTC) .... amended Hoary (talk) 23:03, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Notable portrait subjects edit

I had created a list of people who Marlow took portraits of, which was removed by Lopifalko, who said that it was not relevant as he was a news photographer. However, if you look at Marlow's work, it is clear that he is not only a news photographer - in fact it even states on the page that he 'found that the competition of photojournalism did not suit him.' Moreover, if you look at the actual photos I used as a source, they are clearly personal portraits not paparazzi style photos. I made this section based on one I found in Henri Cartier-Bressons' here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Cartier-Bresson#Notable_portrait_subjects ; if we don't think these sections are justified for one Magnum Photographer, why not another? 10:26, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for the info about them being personal portraits. Let's see what others more knowledgeable than I say about the applicability of their inclusion. They should at least be sourced to objective sources that will thus give an indication of the notability of the portraits, not to Magnum as they were. It would appear to me that the list in the HCB article should also be removed, at least because it is entirely unsourced. -Lopifalko (talk) 11:06, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
For me, the inclusion is not because of the notability of the photos, but rather the notability of the people photographed. It surely says something about someones career if they photograph certain notable people such as Tony Blair, David Beckham etc. While I admit perhaps some people included in the list were questionalbly notable, I feel it should at least be acknowledge on this page that these portraits were made. Furthermore, surely the best source for a photo existing is a link directly to the photo itself, which in this case is hosted on the Magnum site? 13:39, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
It needs to be shown that a non-primary reliable source considered it a noteworthy aspect of his career, for example a broadsheet newspaper mentioning it. I'm still not convinced each needs to be listed, rather than for example saying "his personal work included making portraits of notable individuals." -Lopifalko (talk) 14:01, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
The list in the article on HCB was entirely superfluous. Note the past tense: I've just now deleted it. The list in this article is/was much more painstakingly made -- but no more necessary. (What this article really cries out for is more paragraphs of informative text about Marlow's work and Marlow the man.) -- Hoary (talk) 14:35, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
