Checkland and phenomenology edit

There might be some affinity between Checkland's work on soft systems research and Richard Boland's work on phenomenology in information systems research. If Checkland's work is connected to phenomenology then he does not make the connection himself. If his work is connected to phenomenology I'm quite sure it is not to Phenomenology (science) but to Phenomenology (philosophy). Perhaps I'm just surprised that it is phenomenology that is mentioned and not the huge discussion on how SSM is interpretive and to what extent it belongs to the radical change side in Burrell & Morgan's 2x2 categorisation of social theories or whether it is 'just' regulating. This was a lengthy discussion in Journal of Applied Systems Analysis in the 80ies starting with a paper by Jackson, responses by Checkland, and the follow-up by Jackson, then Rosenhead, and finally Mingers.

I'm also a bit concerned with the illusive statement that what Boland did to information systems. While it is true that Boland was one of the first to bring phenomenology to information systems, it is questionable whether the effect on information systems research and practice is not much less and also quite different than the effects on 'soft systems' on systemic problem-solving.

If there's not a lot of objection I will rewrite the section in a week or two to reflect this.

Lifespan edit

I couldn't find a citable source, but the date 22 October 2022 is attached to a likely obit, giving age at demise of 92 (which checks out). — MaxEnt 01:34, 26 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
