10 edit

An anonymous editor repeatedly deleted the link I added to the film 10 which stars Dudley Moore and Bo Derek. The editor failed to follow the WP:SIMPLE rules and did not provide an edit summary to explain this delete. Eventually the anonymous editor wrote an edit summary "removing irrelevant entry, obviously. don't create links that have no relevance!" but I thought it was already obvious that the film was very much relevant. The film 10 is about a man who judges women on a scale of 1-10 and dreams about a perfect 10. The film title may not be literally "Perfect 10" but the subject is relevant. I thought it would be helpful to other readers who might end up on this page (as I did) who did not remember the exact name of the film, 10 rather than Perfect 10.

Another editor restored my edit (thank you) so it is currently included on disambiguation page but I have added this short explanation in case anyone thinks it needs further discussion. -- 109.79.161.49 (talk) 15:53, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's a really borderline addition, but I left it the "See also" section. That's where entries belong that could never have the same title as the dab page, but could conceivably cause confusion for someone. Station1 (talk) 17:44, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
The anon editor didn't even try to explain his changes, that is especially annoying when people are deleting things. I would have guessed there were all kinds rules for disambig pages but I didn't think they had to be literally and exactly the same as the page title. If that was the case disambig pages could be auto-generated by machine if spelling correction and fuzzy matching was all that was needed.
You pointed to MOS:DAB in your edit summary, but it is along guideline and I'm not entirely clear which part of it you are referring to or why you removed the mention of Perfect 10 (film). (I would hope someone would turn that redirect page into a proper film article eventually.) -- 109.79.161.49 (talk) 20:16, 5 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
It is usually considered good practice to use an edit summary, although it's not mandatory. Generally speaking, only articles that reasonably could be titled with the same title as the dab page's title are included in the body. They don't necessarily have to be exact. For example, Perfect Ten (album) is included in the body even though it's not identical. On the other hand, 10 could never be titled Perfect 10 (because that's not its correct name), but could be in the "See also" section because it might help someone like you who remembered it incorrectly. It's a matter of editorial judgment. As to the British film's entry being removed, we never have entries that have no link, because dab pages are for navigation purposes. If there's no link, there's nowhere for readers to go to. Right now Perfect 10 (film) is just a redirect right back to this same dab page. If you want to write an article about the 2019 film by converting that redirect (which is encouraged if the film is notable), it will definitely be added to the dab page.
