An editor has added this: Debussy in his letter [refusing to write the music for the play] said: "j'aimerai toujours mieux une chose où, en quelque sorte, l'action sera sacrifiée à l'expression longuement poursuivie des sentiments de l'âme. Il me semble que là, la musique peut se faire plus humaine, plus vécue, que l'on peut creuser et raffiner les moyens d'expression". No translation is provided, and as far as my halting French takes me I think it means something to the effect of "I shall always prefer a thing where, in a way, the action will be sacrificed to continued long term feelings of the soul. It seems to me that there, music can become more human, more experienced, that we can dig and refine the means of expression." I don't think this Debussian observation has anything to do with this article on Fauré's music, and I propose to delete it, if nobody demurs. Tim riley (talk) 14:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
