Info seems incorrect

Article says length of Pee Dee River is 60 miles. I don't know exact length, but it must be in excess of 200 miles.

Possible Explanation

I have been working on trying to figure this out since I have completed articles on a number of upstream tributaries and need to finish the progressions. From what I can tell the river length disparity has to do with a different name being used in South Carolina, Great Pee Dee River, versus the one being used in North Carolina, Pee Dee River. If you look at any report or article from South Carolina this river is called the Great Pee Dee River and the reason being given is to distinguish it from the Little Pee Dee River. However, if you have analyzed a lot of rivers, this makes no sense since there are numerous examples of rivers having the main name and a "Little" name without the "Great." For example, Nottoway River -- Little Nottoway River, Tennessee River -- Little Tennessee River, Neshannock Creek -- Little Neshannock Creek, and so on. In North Carolina, below the confluence of the Uwharrie River and the Yadkin River, this same stream is called the Pee Dee River, and practically, if not all, articles from North Carolina will show this name. I am not sure which name is the right one and GNIS is not much help. GNIS shows the Great Pee Dee extending to Cheraw, SC, and the Pee Dee upstream of Cheraw. There is another instance of a different name in different states involving a lake, Kerr Lake (NC) and Buggs Island Lake (VA). The article for Kerr -- Buggs Island Lake handled the situation similar to this article, which could perhaps be the solution or a statement could be made that the river is called the Great Pee Dee in South Carolina and Pee Dee in North Carolina.
