1995 Pan-Pacific Championship naming edit

With regard to the dispute over the above, it would seem to me that the Help page WP:COMMONNAME is not entirely relevant as that page is specifically on "how to name articles". Whilst WP:COMMONNAME justifies the use of "Formula Holden" as the best page name for an article on Formula Holden / Formula Brabham / Formula 4000, I don't believe it gives us a license to use "Formula Holden" in lieu of "Formula Brabham" every time the later is being referred to in an article. Three names for the same category without explanation is confusing. Despite the Brabham re-badge the category was still refered to as Formula Holden throughout those years, the name reversion just underlining that fact. While it may be correct, it does not lead to a better understanding of the subject as it suggests to those unfamiliar two different categories. Similar to this is the insistance of using 'Australian Formula 1', another technically correct name which increases confusion. --Falcadore (talk) 23:05, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
You’re right, correcting only the Pan-Pacific entry and not providing an explanation did introduce an element of confusion to the article. Given that the ‘95 CAMS Manual uses “Formula Brabham”, the 1995/96 Australian Motor Racing Year also uses that name, the Official Program for the Mallala round of the Australian Drivers’ Championship uses “Formula Brabham” and the 1995 AGP program uses the name with reference to a support race, (which I understand was a Pan-Pacific round) there must be a strong case for using the official term. It is my belief that we may ultimately create more confusion by NOT using the correct category name, but I accept that an explanation is also needed. To satisfy the requirements of both historical accuracy and readability I propose we change the relevant section to read “… returned to Australian racing in 1993 driving for Malcolm Ramsay's South Australian Birrana Racing team in Formula Brabham (which reverted to its original name of Formula Holden in 1996)”. With Stokell leading, Birrana came to dominate the category and Stokell took a trifecta…” And of course, we change the Pan-Pacific series name in the table. I am not, nor intend to dispute the official name of the category. I merely want to make the shifting name as clear as possible for those with no background in the sport. --Falcadore (talk) 13:24, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
