What's a patriarch? edit

Patriarch has a wide variety of meanings. Being Jewish, I tend to associate "patriarch" with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But both this dab page (before I edited it) and Patriarch assume that a "Patriarch" most commonly refers to a high-ranking bishop. That puts a particular branch of Christianity at the center of the concept. Not NPOV-compliant, I think.

Some people might have a problem with my simplification of the definition, since I lump together Roman Catholic and Orthodox and link to Catholic_Church_(disambiguation). But members of Orthodox churches also consider themselves "Catholic" meaning "members of a universal church." Another word that means different things in different contexts. Please address this point here before "fixing" my "mistake".

(DAB page summaries need to not recapitulate the whole lede of the article they're linking!)

Finally, let's address the idea of renaming Patriarch to Patriarch (Bishop). I could just go ahead and do this, but I want to hear any objections before I do. I also want suggestions for what Patriarch should be. By default it becomes a link to Patriarch (Bishop), but that repeats the Catholic/Orthodox-centric mistake. I think it should redirect to Patriarch (disambiguation). Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 20:02, 14 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
