Licensing edit

Isn't http://www.iozone.org/ contained in parted magic actually proprietary? Palosirkka (talk) 20:15, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, it is released under a permissive open source licence. Teppic74 (talk) 13:45, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you download this software can it be exported to a foreign country? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.31.106.36 (talk) 15:00, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Freeware vs Commercial edit

in order to download from the site. you have to pay $4.99 for a digital download. does this not make it more commercial software.

Yes, it is no longer free (as in beer): http://forums.partedmagic.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5326. --Emegeve (talk) 13:00, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's still free in that you can legally download it from anywhere else, it's just not available for free via the website. That's not made clear on the site, which won't be popular. 82.13.43.227 (talk) 02:25, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's still freely available via the project's sourceforge page ––130.149.52.33 (talk) 13:37, 29 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
This is no longer true; the author has removed all builds from the project's SourceForge page. 2001:558:6043:20:403E:FD1F:5DEA:6311 (talk) 14:28, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
The software itself is free and still licensed under the GPLv2, the $4.99 you pay is for the download itself not the actual file you are downloading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.232.224.104 (talk) 02:12, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

The article needs a large clean up really, as all of the information cited was about the completely free of cost version of the software. There are no reviews since then, and the SSD recommendations are no longer there (Corsair doesn't recommend it any more, for example). The article describes something that no longer exists in that previous form, and so this needs to be made very clear. I'm taking a look at this - I haven't used Parted Magic since before it cost, and just now came back to this article to find out about this very thing. Finding independent sources is challenging. Bookbrad (talk) 19:01, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

SourceForge Page Downloads removed edit

he remove the downloads from the sourceforge page. now forcing people to buy it what used to be free is no longer deem as freeware. also someone should remove freeware term for the article. it no longer freeware you must pay for it. in order to use it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winsun13 (talkcontribs) 00:01, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The article does not say it is freeware, the article says it is free software, which is software that that is distributed along with its source code. From the article free software, free software is primarily a matter of liberty, not price (users are free to do whatever they want with it – which includes the freedom to redistribute the software free-of-charge, or by selling it (or related services such as support or warranty) for profit. Freeware on the other hand does not cost anything but normally doesn't give any rights to redistribute or modify the software. The current wording does not need to be changed. "The article does not say it is freeware, the article says it is free software, which is software that that is distributed along with its source code." => This is the definition of Open Source Software, not of Free Software. Free Software goes even much, much further than just *showing* you the sources! Free Software grants 4 fundamental rights along with showing you the sources, which are:
Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

  • The article is clearly using unclear wording in order to hide the fact that it costs money to download. There has to be a way to clarify that, while it is free to modify, it costs money to obtain from the developer. Npaladin2000 (talk) 18:17, 7 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Source code is not freely distributed anymore, anyway. IMHO, this article needs to be more specific, not everyone (very few actually) knows the real meaning of the "free" in "free software", and the fact that PM is now a paid download is rapidly dealt with in a very small, very missable sentence mid-article, while it should be stated in the summary box. 79.47.54.227 (talk) 21:30, 23 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • The link to the source is easily found in the documentation section on their website. The link leads to this part of the site - https://partedmagic.com/beefdrapes/source/ People need to get over it and just use somthing else if they don't like Pmagic. Good grief. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bob Longwong (talkcontribs) 01:55, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

COI edit

The WP:COI tag has been repeatedly removed, and there's several WP:SPA accounts editing with edit warring / WP:OWN / lack of full edit summaries. Please disclose any COI you have, and any connection between the accounts - they appeared when the COI editor User:Patrick Verner stopped editing, so may be WP:SOCKs. Source Code edit

The source code is dated... Oct 2013 http://beefdrapes.partedmagic.com/source/

Additionally, Send $20 to admin@partedmagic.com through paypal to recieve the source for Parted Magic on DVD. Please state the version of the source code you require. http://beefdrapes.partedmagic.com/source/source.txt

Does this still qualify as proper OSS / FS / FOSS / FLOSS / GPL software? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LPCA (talkcontribs) 23:16, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Well what exactly are you paying for? The source code or for someone to put the it on to a DVD and the cost of the this physical media? Is it the same source code as is being provided free via download? --wintonian talk 23:39, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
