Picture of the day

The Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa) is a dabbling duck found throughout much of the southwestern Pacific. It has a dark body, and a paler head with a dark crown and facial stripes, with a green speculum and pale underwing. The size range is 54–61 cm (21–24 in), with males being slightly larger than females.Photo: Fir0002

The picture of the PBD from Tasmania looks like a hybrid Mallard/Black Duck, it is too pale around the head and the white under tail coverts are a give-away. This picture should be labelled to indicate this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.91.9.9 (talk) 21:59, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

I agree it seems to be a hybrid. There's a score key for distinguishing hybrids from pure grey ducks here. The speculum isn't visible, but the colours of the beak, legs, nape, and tail all seem to point towards this being a hybrid. Green speculum

Has the green colouring of the speculum always been there, or is it the result of interbreeding with the Mallards? Mr G (talk) 13:10, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
