St Leger win edit

Some modern sources have his price as 100/1, but I am going with the Racing Calendar, which is as near as you will get to being official. It is probable that he was available at the longer price, as the starting prices were unofficial estimates at that time. Given the facts that the Leger was the only occasion on which Otterington looked anything like a top-class runner and that Catton, by far the best horse in the race ran a stinker, it's a bit surprising that there are no suggestions of foul play in the contemporary sources. Otterington disappears from racing history after June 1815. I suppose he could have been gelded and used as a hack or hunter, or ended his days "servicing" farm-mares at a few shillings a cover. Tigerboy1966  04:49, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
