This sentence strikes me a being non-ideal:-

In other words the magnitude of the output signal is determined by the length of time a voltage is present at its input as the current through the feedback loop charges or discharges the capacitor as the required negative feedback occurs through the capacitor.

I would suggest it could be replaced by this (or just the first 2 sentences of this): -

In other words the magnitude of the output signal is determined by the length of time a voltage is present at its input. The integrating function is provided by the capacitor according to the general capacitor characteristic Vcap = (1/C)*integral(I)dt. The current (I) through the input resistor (I = Vin/R) and that through the capacitor (provided by the feedback path) are equal and opposite. The voltage developed across the capacitor is Vcap = (1/C)*integral(I)dt = (1/R*C)*integral(Vin)dt, and since the inputs of the amplifier are at ground potential, this is the negative of the output voltage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.32.50.178 (talk) 06:43, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Merge proposal edit

I propose this article be merged into Operational amplifier applications, as the information covered here is mostly covered in the target article, and there isn't enough in-depth discussion to warrant a separate article. I suggest merging/expanding practical applications, the frequency response discussion, and any new points on the practical circuit issues. The derivation is fairly basic but could be valuable—it seems out of place in the target article, though, so might be appropriate as a sub-page (as I've seen some electromagnetic articles do).

If not, this is a stub that, along with having explanations and figures fixed up, could be expanded with some more theoretical analysis of both circuits and further discussion of practical issues, their solutions, applications. I'm not sure that level of analysis on a circuit is within Wikipedia's technical article scope, though. I could contribute theory, not so much practical discussion. @Laogeodritt: I have made an attempt to merge the information in this article into Operational amplifier applications#Inverting integrator. I prepared a SVG of the circuit in the style used in that article.
