Depth v. Height variation edit

I think a word of explanation is required here to avoid confusion in the reader's mind. One figure is given for the 'depth' of the cave, another for the 'height variation' - the unwary might have thought these amounted to the the same thing - it seems that is not the case. Can someone in the know add a word (or maybe more!) thanks Geopersona (talk) 21:22, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've now removed this figure as it derives from a survey which includes passage other than OFD itself - Chas's Dig from whence the 504m highest elevation comes and using which the 320m figure was derived) does not (at least not yet) form a part of the OFD system. cheers Geopersona (talk) 11:01, 26 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Name in English edit

Lower case for cave of the black spring looks quite odd. At Cadair Idris we have "Chair of Idris", at Corn Du we have "Black Horn" and at Ogof y Daren Cilau we have Rock of refuge? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:37, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Martin - I tried checking in the MoS on this point but failed to find guidance though a couple of editors replied, giving me some reassurance that simple glosses ought to use lower case. Myself, I don't think it looks odd but then in my other life, that style is the norm. I've always seen translations with upper case initials as appearing too much like a proper name and I'd want to avoid these (through Wikipedia's omnipresence in search results) becoming names by which certain features were known, to the detriment of the native language, be that Welsh or any other. Of course some are regularly referred to by both English and Welsh names and in that case, we'd all want to use upper case for both languages. OFD is frequently explained as meaning 'cave of the black spring' but that is certainly not a commonly used name for it - in my experience, OFD is probably most common (depending perhaps on which community of interest you're amongst!), followed by Ogof Ffynnon Ddu. best regards Geopersona (talk) 07:58, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Geopersona. Yes, I guess that's meaning-with-a-small-m and not name-with-a-big-N. Otherwise Hywel would have called it "Black Fountain Caves" instead of "Fynnon Ddu Caves". I can vouch for the fact it's commonly known as "OFD 1" or "OFD 2" (although I have only done the trough trip once!)Martinevans123 (talk) 08:47, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Cheers, still waiting to do my through trip though what small portion I have explored has convinced me that I must return! Geopersona (talk) 20:02, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Word of advice: go in the middle of Summer when it hasn't rained for weeks, lol. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:13, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
