People are genuinely debating the accents and production of a children's show (an excellent children's show to be fair, but still a children's show). I shall join in. Dashi's accent is neither Australian or Kiwi. I think it's meant to be Kiwi but falls a bit short. That's coming from an Australian who knows New Zealanders and is far too old to be watching Octonauts.

the character section needs work.

If at all discernable, the American voice actors should be identified (I haven't found them yet). Peso speaks English with an Argentinian accent in the US version, and Dashi speaks like Lt Uhura. I can't tell if they toned down Tweak's cowgirl accent for the US audience. I think she sounds a very ostentatious cowgirl in the UK version, but American Southwestern in the US version. 184.250.140.219 (talk) 16:42, 9 October 2014 (UTC)

Someone changed Tweak's VA to Lara Jill Miller from Jo Wyatt. I'm pretty sure it's still Jo Wyatt, if one checks her official site (http://jowyatt.com/) she lists Tweak from Octonauts as a role, and Tweak sounds nearly identical between the UK and US versions. --Xeknos (talk) 02:45, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Is the captain really a polar bear? I thought he was a teddy bear! Anyhow, interesting series with stories based around factual marine info, would benefit from episode summaries giving more info on species and habitats covered. Errr ... it says that Daschi is Australian.... I thought she was from New Zealand (I am from Australia). There are plenty of Australian Characters in the series, like the Albino Humpback whale and the Sailfish, and their accents are rather distinct. From the POV of the series, Peso is Antarctican. I've always thought he sounds English. As for Dashi, she is voiced by an English actress, so I wonder if she even knows the difference between an Australian and New Zealand accent (most British people don't). I can only speak for the one that CBeebies puts out (BBC, UK), but Kwazi does not have any particular accent, certainly not cockney, he frequently feigns a cornish-style pirate accent. Episode order

The episode list numbering is rather weird, it's not chronological and differs from the list at imdb [1] and the Spanish wikipedia page, both of which are chronological, with the Whale Shark as episode one on 4 Oct 2010. Unless someone has info on the official numbering being as currently shown, I'm inclined to change it to match the imdb one. Samatarou (talk) 18:37, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Well I went ahead and changed it, it now matches the published Cbeebies/imdb info on air dates and episode numbers. Since the schedules show episode 51 being broadcast out of order (and some sites refer to it as a Xmas special) I've listed it separately. Missing summaries have been added, a lot of these are short "placeholder" descriptions based on the Cbeebies press pack and schedules info, feel free to rewrite with longer plot descriptions, especially incorporating relevent marine bio links about things encountered during the episodes. UK copyright and porting material to other sites

Hi. I am interesting in improving the Octonauts Wikiaa, which is basically non-existant. I am a bit reluctant as I a) have no experience of this and b) may be duplicating effort from elsewhere, but on the other hand, it is not nice to look at. Wikia uses US Fair use copyright terms. Is there a significant difference since I believe Chorion are UK based. Should I contact them before I start using material in a limited manner for educational purposes?

TV Series - languages and countries

I just tidied up the section on the different languages and countries where The Octonauts TV series has been shown, adding Finland (where my girls love it!). The previous edit included Spanish for Brazil, but they speak Portuguese in Brazil. Contradictions and confusion

Who can help resolve these?

The page intro says "The Octonauts ... produced by Silvergate Media..." The TV series section credits Chorion as co-producer, and the side bar lists Brown Bag Films as the production company.

The side bar says the original run was "September 16, 2010 – May 21, 2012". The TV series section says "It first aired in the UK on October 4, 2010 ... ended after 52 episodes on December 11, 2011."

It's hard to call it interesting. The concept was created by Canadians, Animated by an Irish company, Produced by a company with headquarters in London, New York and Sidney, voiced by mainly English actors, and commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Second and third seasons of The Octonauts are currently in production at Brown Bag Films for Silvergate Media. Season 2 will premiere on CBeebies on Monday, November 19 2012. It features 22 x 11 min episodes and 2 x 22 min specials. Season 3 features 20 x 11 min episodes and 3 x 22 min specials.

Well regardless of Twitter the second series has started anyhow, but interleaved with reruns of the first series: the new episodes are shown every weekday at 5pm whilst the old rerun episodes are shown at 7:45am. Series 2

Bizarrely it looks like both ep 10 and 11 have the same title (Sperm Whale) - the synopses are different so I don't think it's a confusion about episode numbers. We'll know when ep.11 actually airs on Monday! Note that the episode descriptions for S2 eps 7-9 and 11-15 are currently just placeholders based on the TV guide synopses, reworded a bit to avoid sounding like promos.

I've also consolidated all the specials into one section as there doesn't seem any point in having separate sections with only 1 or 2 eps in each, also they tend to get shown in sequence anyway. There doesn't seem to be any canonical numbering for the specials, so I've just numbered them logically, i.e. 1–3. Samatarou (talk) 19:43, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

It turned out the title in the TV listings was a mistake - episode was actually called "The Long-armed Squid".

Incidentally I notice that although the title announced by Capn. Barnacles is always "The Octonauts and ....", the titles as given on the BBC website and in TV listings omit that bit, I am wondering if we should also omit it in the episode guide and just put the substantive part, like "The Vampire Squid" instead of "The Octonauts and the Vampire Squid"? I think there is some merit to this, given that Octonauts was recently nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award. ISTM that although the books were Canadian/American, the TV series was commissioned by the BBC (and is thus British-financed & led) but with production outsourced to the Irish company Brown Bag. The role of Chorion (now Silvergate) is somewhat unclear, I think it is an intellectual property company which hoovered up the TV rights from Meomi and so is basically acting as a middleman which connects the various parties together in order to rake in royalties. As to who owns the finished TV series itself (and thus gets the revenue from it being syndicated to other broadcasters such as ABC and Disney) is unclear, but it must be either Silvergate or the BBC, both of which are British I think. As for Meomi, the TV storylines aren't based on the Meomi books (which are based on fantasy not biology), they just reuse the setup & characters with new stories developed to the BBC's specifications (notably that they teach children about teamwork, helping others, and the natural world). In the end I think a description of "British/Irish" seems appropriate for the TV series given that it is BBC-led but has been accepted as made in Ireland by the IFTAs. Under the category of TV Series you touch on the fact that some of the voices were dubbed. In the cast below, you should be providing those names. They may not be the original case, but show probably get more viewers on Disney and Disney Jr, than it did on BBC, and those voice actors should be recognized.

Under the Episode Guide - Series 2... Episode 14 is named "Octonauts and the Swashbuckling Swordfish" This episode was renamed on Disney to "Octonauts and the Flying Swords" This should be noted in the title area, or at least the episode description.

Re. voice actors, someone would need to get a US cast list, at present the only information we have is a US viewer's comment that some of the voices are different to the ones on the British DVDs. For all I know the same actors might have done both versions using different accents! (The "Australian" (New Zealand?) and American accents in the Cbeebies version are done by English actors after all.)

Viewing figures: Cbeebies is free to air and gets about 2 million viewers of which 1/2 million watch Octonauts according to BARB, I believe Disney needs a cable subscription so audience reach will be a lower percentage of a bigger population so who knows? They don't seem to have released any viewing figures that I can find.

As for the title change, I'm sure I saw "flying swords" given as an episode title on an American TV website but right now can't find a TV schedules list containing that episode title. Samatarou (talk) 00:26, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Broadcasts resumed on the 2nd September 2013. At the time of writing, two new episodes have been shown: 'Humphead Parrotfish' and 'Gulper Eels'. As they are numbered episodes 21 and 22 on the CBeebies iPlayer page, I'm guessing these are the remaining episodes from season 2.

It's a shame the new episodes seem to be more fantasy based with the science little more than an embellishment whereas the science used to be the plot driver. Trying to catch a meteor for instance, very silly, surely there was an interesting story about the environmental consequences of the rock and coral-eating habits of the parrotfish they could have done instead of having it eat a falling meteor! Also the Mariana Trench special was clearly all about merchandising with a whole new toy range being showcased. It would be nice to find some thoughtful critique of the series to reference which looks at things like the balance between educational and marketing content since Wikipedia doesn't allow editors to indulge in original research. Season 3 Episode 2 - Water Bears 5th September 2013 The Octonauts venture into a dangerous red-hot lava tube to rescue a teeny tiny water bear who doesn't seem to mind the heat at all!

Season 3 Episode 3 - Cone Snails 6th September 2013 Only Peso can save the day when a cone snail invades the Octopod and picks off the crew one by one with its dangerous harpoons.

Season 3 Episode 3 - Artificial Reef 9th September 2013 When an underwater storm destroys a small reef, which a frogfish and other creatures depend on, Tweak and her crewmates must convert the Gup-F into an artificial reef before another storm strikes!

The heading for "Special Episodes" immediately follows the heading for Series 3, with the description of the Series 3 episodes following after that. The "Special Episodes" heading should be moved below the episode descriptions for Series 3 and prior to the descriptiions of the special episodes.

Surely it is a positive thing to portray sharing to our children and to show credit is given where credit is due. The first line of this article states that it is British. That is not totally true.

British English vs. American English

Is there a proper way to edit so that both British and American synonyms for the same word can be used, thus losing the American-bias? In the description of the Vegimals, one is described as 'half eggplant'. Dashi/Sauci accent issue

The table of characters says Dashi has an American accent; however in the version of the Octonauts that is screened in Australia, she has an Australian accent. (By version, I mean the graphics are almost certainly identical to that screened worldwide but one or more voices may have be different to those used in versions of the same series that are screened elsewhere). If you are in Australia, go to the ABC iView site and you can watch an episode or two, to see that I am right; unfortunately I have no idea how to cite it though.

Whether or not Dashi has an Australian, American or other accent in versions of the series that are screened elsewhere in the world, it would be good if the table of characters was corrected to she has an Australian accent in at least the Australian version. Well to this New Zealander, it sounds Australian (i's sound like e's as in "peecture" whenever Dashi takes a photo - ask an Australian to say "fish and chips", they'll say "feesh and cheeps", and a Kiwi would say "fush and chups". Note: Recent UK editions of the books changed Sauci's name to Dashi to match the television series.

Other Vegimals

• Barrot, half-bass, half-carrot. Although nervous, he can go super fast in an emergency.
• Grouber, half-grouper, half-ginger. He is big and can eat almost anything.
• Tominnow, half-minnow, half-tomato. He is the littlest one, but he is also a daredevil.
• Codish, half-cod, half-radish. He is very clumsy and also causes accidents.

Recurrent minor characters

• Calico Jack, a pirate cat and Kwazii's grandfather. His exploits are frequently talked about but he is assumed long-dead until he finally makes an appearance in the Amazon Adventure special. In real life, the pirate Calico Jack was the creator of the Jolly Roger, though the Octonauts character's name might also be an allusion to the Calico cat.
• Pinto, Peso's little brother, a young penguin who visits in episode 24, episode 32 and the Great Penguin Race special. He initially aspires to be a pirate like Kwazii but later decides he'd rather be a medic like Peso.
• Sandy the sea turtle, a good friend of Tweak's. She swims long distances and makes appointments to meet the Octonauts in several episodes.
• Boris the narwhal, a friend of Captain Barnacle's from when he was young. Boris remains in the Arctic but the Octonauts meet him in several episodes.
• Pearl the sea otter and Shellington's married sister who recently had a baby, first seen in the episode The Urchin Invasion.

Vehicles

• The Octopod is their mobile home base and the biggest vehicle. It is resembles a giant octopus.
• The GUP-A is propeller-powered and Captain Barnacles' favorite. It is resembles an anglerfish.
• The GUP-B is Kwazii's favorite Gup, which is the fastest of all GUPs and had undergone 4 modifications (Flying fish mode, tiger shark mode, a turbo button and a seat ejection). It resembles a tiger shark.
• The strong GUP-C has a towline and is powerful enough to tow an elephant seal. It can also be used as an icebreaker when fitted with a special reinforced prow. It resembles a blue whale.
• The GUP-D is Tweak's favorite multipurpose GUP, which has two claws, two drills and six legs. It is resembles a manta ray/crab (when legged).
• The GUP-E is an ambulance GUP and colored green. A tank behind can be filled with water for creatures with gills. It resembles a guppy.
• The GUP-F was a pedal-powered metal-framed vehicle only seen in series 1, episode 10, Octonauts and the Speedy Sailfish, used to round up the runaway GUPs A-E. It was built to look like a clownfish. In the episode "The Artificial Reef" the GUP-F is destroyed by a hurricane and is converted into an artificial reef. In the same episode, it is also revealed by Tweak that it was the very first prototype GUP built.
• The GUP-G first appeared "The Growing Goldfish" before its actual appearance in the series. It is an amphibious GUP resembling a salamander.
• The GUP-H resembles a dragonfly to soar above the sea, and watch the animals hop in and out of the water. It is first seen in series 4, episode 1, "The Poison Dart Frogs".
• The GUP-I is an polar exploration station and rugged vehicle first seen in the 8th special, "Operation Deep Freeze". It resembles a water bear.
• The Gup-J has only been released and seen as a GUP Speeder toy. It seems to resemble a tree frog.
• The GUP-K makes its debut in "The Great Swamp Search" It features chomping jaws in case of fallen logs and swamp speeders for farther travel. Its design resembles an alligator.
• The GUP-L only been released and seen as a GUP Speeder toy. Its design is unknown.
• The GUP-M is a land-based GUP which made its first debut in "The Caves of Sac Actun" Its design and it's "M" stand for mudskipper and/or motorcycle.
• The GUP-N is an upcoming GUP. Nothing is known about it yet, but it has only been seen on the Octonauts Gup Alphabet Chart with a question mark as the picture.
• The GUP-O is also an upcoming sled-based GUP based on the orca/killer whale. The blueprint was seen in the GUP-S Close-Up.
• The GUP-P resembles a parrotfish, which made its first debut in "The Great Barrier Reef", along with the GUP-W. The only feature currently known in the special is its ability to make strong jets of bubbles, especially to help it move faster, as seen when Barnacles uses them to ward off the crown of thorns starfish, and when it's needed to reach a patient quickly.
• The GUP-Q makes its debut in "The Caves Of Sac Actun". It resembles a hammerhead shark and a piranha. It features the Q-Scooters, which are the eyes of the
• The GUP-X is a powerful and sturdy tracked vehicle presented to Captain Barnacles as a Christmas present from Tweak. It can split into 3 sections, for instance, a glider, the 'Octo-Ski' and its central main section with the caterpillar tracks. It is first seen in series 1, episode 52, "The Great Christmas Rescue". In "The Skeleton Coast Adventure", It resembles a horseshoe crab.
• The Deep Sea Octolab is a moveable base from which the deepest parts of the ocean can be studied and first appears in the 4th special episode, The Mariana Trench Adventure. It is dome-shaped and stands on springy legs to cope with subterranean tremors.
• The GUP-V is a vehicle designed by the Vegimals in the 5th special episode, A Very Vegimal Christmas. It is shaped like a train.
• The GUP-S is an Antarctic exploration vehicle first seen in the 6th special episode The Over Under Adventure. Like the GUP-X, it can split in 2 sections, with the front part forming an amphibious snowmobile called the Octo-Sled. The Gup-S it resembles a swordfish or narwhal, with a tusk-like ice-penetrating heated drill at the front.

Big change in dates in List of Octonauts Episodes

Anonymous changes to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Octonauts_episodes have made some BIG changes to episode dates, pushing the first shown dates back 10 years from 2010-15 to 2000-2005. Can anyone confirm the validity of these changes? Kirbett (talk) 10:55, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

Proposed Separate Page for DVD Releases

I am making a proposal to split off the Octonauts DVD releases table onto a separate page from the Octonauts main 'Wiki page', with a link from that main page (The Octonauts). This would be done in a similar way to the List of The Octonauts episodes which has a seperate 'Wiki Page' dedicated to the list of each episode of The Octonauts. The data on the Octonauts DVD releases have meant that the DVD releases tables dominate The Octonauts page now, distracting from the main article. This proposed split edit would in affect create 2 manageable-sized pages, half the size of the current page.
A similar split was done with the Dora the Explorer 'Wiki page', when the information for the home video/DVD releases become to cumbersome for the main 'Wiki page' of that animated TV series. In that case, the DVD and VHS releases were likewise split off into a separate page List of Dora the Explorer home media releases, with a link from the main page.
The draft of the page that is intened to be created from this proposed split can be found at Draft:List of The Octonauts DVD Releases.
Is anyone apposed to this idea? I will wait for a week of so and then make the change, however, if I hear opposition I will not proceed with this proposal. Make sure you have a look over it and let me know whether it is suitable for the purpose of splitting of the DVD release content. Previously, the huge "DVD release" section The Octonauts#DVD Releases of the The Octonauts 'Wiki Page' dominated it, detracting from the content & making the page cumbersome to download. The foreshadowed migration of the Octonauts "DVD release" section content to the newly developed (26 April 2020) 'Wiki page', i.e. List of The Octonauts DVD Releases, has just occured. A transfer deadline (1 week - 2 May 2020) was given in this 'Wiki Talk' section's migration, but the move had no negative feedback. The approved "DVD Release" page List of The Octonauts DVD Releases was approved and 'Wiki Editors' have already been editing this new resource, also with no negative feedback. Add the GUP-Z vehicles.

Untested proto GUPs used during servicing of other GUPs. Appears in "Octonauts & The ring of Fire"

Each vehicle has a mysterious Z-Button that when pressed bring all Z-GUPs together at high speed to combine into a Vent Shrimp like vehicle that is heat-proof and ready for action. Later Tweak reveals that there's yet another untested mode, that there's no button for, so she has to re-wire the existing Z-Button to access it. Once the new re-wired Z-Button is pressed the combined Z-GUPs change once again into Mantis Shrimp mode with a powerful spear and hammer claws, but only for a limited amount of time as this mode takes up tons of power to run and once depleted the five z-GUPs will blast apart.
