Free jazz

Regarding User:Ac@osr's modification of free jazz to free improvisation - I've changes this back, as the Nurse With Wound list does indicate a free jazz influence. Cnwb 21:33, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

I would have to disagree; whilst a (very) small handful of the artists listed had "jazz" backgrounds, the notion that the music of AMM, Han Bennink or Steve Beresford could be considered "Free Jazz" in the original Ornette Coleman inspired/defined mode borders on ridiculous. In fact, it's noteable how many of the now revered jazz figures from the relevant era are absent from the list - Albert Ayler, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp, Phaoroh Sanders etc. This is probably more to do with the lazy use of the term "free jazz" to describe any non-linear, improvised music from around 1965 onwards than anything else, which has been a bugbear of mine for quite some time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ac@osr (talk • contribs)

Possibly. For a long time, improvisation was as good as synonymous with jazz but usually involved a group unit extemporising on a theme provided by one musician (who took the writing credit/publishing). Where the mostly European acts on the NWW list differed was in the lack of regard for the individual - AMM is probably the archetype here, with their explicit intent to sublimate the individual within a group identity - and the lack of value given to traditional musical ability; the greater value was on what was new or interesting rather than technically perfect or in tune. The extent to which free jazz was actually "free" is arguable, although the trajectory of John Coltrane's music from, say, 1957 until his death ten years later is a perfect illustration of the increasing lack of constraint within the form, a pulling away that saw Coltrane lose most of both his band and his audience. • I don't think its necessary to have a comprehensive list of compilations, as this is already maintained on the Brainwashed site. I was thinking that we should only have those curated by Stapleton or featuring more than one piece by NWW. I'll look at this in the new year. Ac@osr (talk) 11:32, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Foxtrot compilation

i dont want to upset the NWW discography, so i'll leave it to the NWW fans. NWW included some songs on Foxtrot (compilation), including the alias The Inflatable Sideshow.AlexOvShaolin 03:43, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

• Nice addition, good work. Inflatable Sideshow wasn't strictly a Stapleton alias - the group did exist without him and I'm pretty sure Stapleton wasn't involved in the one full-length CDR they did. Members of TIS provided much of the instrumentation on An Awkward Pause and, of course, Peat Bog is Earthmonkey who collaborated w/NWW. The group finished when Daragh Grealy was killed in a road accident - Salt Marie Celeste is dedicated to his memory. Ac@osr 09:01, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Collaborators list

I've pretty much cleared this out excepting those notable in their own right. Cut and pasting the cast list of "Sylvie And Babs" is pretty much worthless (especially as some of those listed didn't actually contribute...) and some of the others are poorly listed; it is wrong to credit each member of Stereolab individually, especially as Stapleton never worked directly with any of them, rather just using whatever tapes they provided. I don't think a full list is appropriate or necessary in much the same way as one wouldn't list the session violinists on, say, "How To Disappear Completely" as Radiohead's "collaborators". Besides which, it made the article messy. I will listen to arguments to the contrary, of course. Ac@osr (talk) 15:53, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
