Merge proposal

Gadfium has proposed to merge Northcote Point into this article. If I put Northcote and Northcote Point into Google Maps, I get two distinct areas. Most of Northcote is north of Onewa Road. All of Northcote Point is south of that road. It would thus appear that we are talking about two distinct suburbs. There is some material in this article that appears to belong to the Northcote Point article. Schwede66 05:53, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Both appear to be covered by the same Statistics New Zealand area unit. See [1]. The area units are subdivided into mesh blocks but these are generally smaller areas than we would consider having a Wikipedia article about.-gadfium 06:07, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Northcote and Northcote Central

Northcote, New Zealand (let's call it "Northcote" for short) and Northcote Central is a mess. Do they overlap, is one part of the other, or are they separate areas? The info box has Northcote south of Northcote Central. Almost all the content (except pop.) of Northcote Central – the shopping centre and three schools – is also included in Northcote. That makes it look like Northcote Central is part of Northcote, yet the Northcote pop. is given as half that of Northcote Central.

1. Should Northcote Central be merged into Northcote?
2. Should one be defined as part of the other, and the pop. figures corrected for that?
3. Should the two be kept separate, but the Northcote Central content moved from Northcote to Northcote Central, and the boundary defined precisely? If so, should Northcote be renamed "Northcote South", if we follow StatsNZ?

@Nurg: There were three articles: Northcote (this one), Northcote Central, and Northcote Point. Northcote is the entire suburb (and incidentally the name of the electorate of the same name). Northcote Point is the southern portion of the suburb, and it is literally a point jutting out into the harbour to which the northern end of the Auckland Harbour Bridge makes landfall. The Point is clearly demarcated from the rest of the suburb by Onewa Road, a 4-lane transport route running east-west across the suburb.

Northcote Point was merged into Northcote, New Zealand sometime in the recent past, and redirects there. To answer your question, Northcote Central is used to make a distinction from the Point (ie. it means everything but the Point) but I think it really centres on the Northcote shopping centre and the businesses there, and is used that way by Auckland Council in its redevelopment plans for the shopping centre. Thanks, @Akld guy: So, you're saying Northcote is the entire suburb, and divides into two: Northcote Central and Northcote Point (though the latter no longer has a separate article). But acc to Northcote Central, it had a pop. of 8,757 in 2006, which is bigger than the whole suburb at 4,122 in 2006 – this is impossible. It looks to me that we should merge Northcote Central into Northcote, as was done for Northcote Point. Nurg (talk) 10:03, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

StatsNZ data from the 2013 census lists a population of 4254 for Northcote South, which it says was an increase of 132 over the 2006 census. That tallies with the 4122 already listed for 2006. I'm unsure what is meant by Northcote South, and more investigation is needed. Akld guy (talk) 11:19, 23 April 2018 (UTC)

There are no formal definitions for suburb boundaries, so I use the census area units. In many cases, the area units are smaller than the suburbs, so I combine two or more to correspond to the suburb. Each census shifts the area unit boundaries, so the population is not directly comparable from one census to the next, although Statistics New Zealand does provide the population for the last two censuses for the current boundaries. For the area we are calling Northcote Central, I used the area units of Ocean View and Tuff Crater in the 2013 census, and the area units of Northcote Central (Auckland), Akoranga and Northcote Tuff Crater in the 2018 census. For the area we are calling Northcote, I used the area unit Northcote South in 2013 and the area units Northcote South (Auckland) and Northcote Point (Auckland) in 2018. I'm just using my judgement to decide what fits. Perhaps Akoranga should be given an article of its own, as it's primarily a commercial area rather than a residential one. Perhaps Northcote Tuff Crater should be included in Northcote rather than Northcote Central. Maps of these area units can be seen for 2013 and 2018. -gadfium 04:42, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Pronunciation

The article gave the pronunciation as /ˈnɔːrθkət/, but without any sources (and this didn't match my own experiences). I couldn't find an authoritative source, but I did a brief survey on YouTube:

• /ˈnɔːrθkət/: one instance @ 0:10
• /ˈnɔːrθkoʊt/: 14 instances @ 0:08 and 2:430:390:490:020:030:340:14, 0:50, 2:140:05, 0:270:07, 0:59

There's likely a lot more that I'm missing, but since /koʊt/ was overwhelmingly what people preferred, I've added this as the primary pronunciation. If there are any sources I'm missing, please let me know (or add a citation to the page). --Prosperosity (talk)
