NOTE ADDED NOVEMBER 3, 2008 It struck me that I had heard the melody somewhere else. Then I remembered: Sinead O'Connor's Poor Paddy's Lament, which also is morose and has tragedy in every verse. The beat is different but the tune is almost identical.
