Rhode Island

Very interesting article. I have to question, however, the name "Rhode Island vampire panic." The only reference cited directly about this uses the heading "New England vampire panic." Mercy Brown was in RI, but the other example listed took place in Vermont. I suppose this is just one way the article needs more sources. I don't think it has any WP:N issues, however. The sources are reliable and a quick Google shows a ton more. I'm going to hunt down the documentary listed on the Mercy Brown page :) --Rhododendrites (talk) 14:11, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Good point about the title. There is a short study "Bioarcheological and Biocultural Evidence for the New England Vampire Folk Belief" suggesting it spread to Connecticut and Massachusets as well as RI and Vermont. Maybe "New England Vampire Belief" would be a better name, given a few more examples and sources? "Belief" feels more neutral than "panic" too. Nesbot (talk) 15:28, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Another question is if this article should be about those few years in particular, in which case "scare" or "panic" might be appropriate, or if the subject spans enough time that it would be better to have Vampires in New England folklore or something. --Rhododendrites (talk) 15:50, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Interesting question. The only older vampire-type belief I can find in New England is the Skadegamutc of the Wabanaki Confederacy. It isn't a vampire but does share some characteristics with vampires - dead during the day and raises at night to kill, eat or curse people. The other examples I found so far are all based on TB outbreaks, covering more than a century from the late 18th to late 19th. Given the long timespan do you think it's ok to use Vampires in New England folklore? If so should the article include the Skadegamutc or stay focussed on the vampire scare? Frederick Ransom

I got Frederick Ransom from "Meet the Real-Life Vampires of New England and Abroad" but his name shows in the index of The Element Encyclopedia of Vampires By Theresa Cheung in the google books preview so that may be a better reference. I think he is worth adding as I have seen other articles about "educated city folk" sneering at this believe in vampires but he falls into that category and was still a victim.
