Tagged for reassessment edit

I've been working on this article and tagged it for reassessment. Comments would be appreciated! --LJ (talk) 05:17, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

This probably could go to GA (though I didn't do a thorough read). Only one space should be used between sentences though. --Rschen7754 (T C) 05:22, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I always learned to use two spaces after sentences in school...I'll change that. I do plan to take this to GA soon. Thanks! --LJ (talk) 05:43, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

For the record, it depends on which style guide you were taught. The schools I went to accepted either of two style guides, one published by the Modern Language Association, the name of the other escapes me. Most of these style guides have been around for decades and were originally designed around the limitations of the mechanical typewriter and/or pen and paper. These older guides are getting revised to reflect the abilities of new technology, but like any bureaucratic organization it takes time. I suspect that's why wikipedia invented their own style guide. Another difference between wikipedia's style guide and what most of us where taught in school is which case to use in headings, wikipedia uses sentence case, I was taught title case. I still mess that up sometimes. One that doesn't bother me, but is an obvious example, most older style guides called for starting a new paragraph by indenting the first sentence to separate. Most newer style guides call for a blank line to separate. I went to school in the transition era between typewriters and computers (which drove the change) and am used to seeing both.Dave (talk) 15:56, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Try as I might, I couldn't find anything wrong with this article (other than a few typos and new information that I added). Good job, and the subject matter is very interesting IMO. --ErgoSum88 (talk) 20:17, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Black Mailbox edit

Although the "Black Mailbox" is still white, it's had a makeover since the photo accompanying the article was taken - see "Black Mailbox in 2005". If anyone thinks it's worth the effort, I'll upload the image. There were also two dead cows within a hundred yards of the mailbox when I was there, but I suspect their demise was due to trucks rather than aliens. Sure, feel free to upload the image to Commons. It looks like it might be a better image. --LJ (talk) 22:10, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I finally got round to doing this - a year and a half is pretty swift by my standards! Mr Larrington (talk) 15:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reports are that the white "black mailbox" is gone. Sources are DreamlandResort.com and the page for the nearby geocache. travisl (talk) 16:44, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

"Shrouded in mystery" edit

I've reverted Ljthefro's use of the phrase "shrouded in mystery". Neither it nor the earlier "air of mystery around it" is appropriate for an encyclopedia.

Before you say anything:

  • Yes, I know this article passed GA. Doesn't mean there still aren't things that can't be improved.
  • Yes, I know the article is (necessarily) somewhat whimsical. The Onion has proven for more than a decade that whimsy and fun can be communicated effectively despite (heck, because of) non-colorful language. Also see Swift's "A Modest Proposal" and Asimov's "The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline".
  • More to the point, the entire sentence in question says nothing that the next sentence already doesn't say. Given that this is an encyclopedia, the best, most NPOV way of communicating that SR 375 is an unusual highway is to state the plain facts (that it runs near Area 51) and let readers make the connections as they see fit. YLee (talk) 09:09, 21 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would argue that the tone is not necessarily inappropriate, given similar tone and remarks used in several of the sources. Perhaps "mystery" is not the right word to convey the thought. In any event, the first sentence is now a abrupt statement that doesn't transition nicely to the remainder of the paragraph. I'll have to think about how to better state the thought or otherwise open that paragraph--too tired to do it now... --LJ (talk) 10:19, 21 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Again, I want to emphasize that I understand that the subject is somewhat non-serious. WP:TONE's guidelines still apply, though, which means we must avoid any slang, colloquialism, or non-serious phrasing as much as possible. If a source uses language that is inappropriate in tone for Wikipedia but is otherwise effective, simply quote it and cite it, as is done elsewhere in the article. I don't think it's necessary in this case, though; the phase "top-secret Area 51" right away tells readers that there is something unusual about SR 375, and the rest of the paragraph fleshes out this theme. Gas station in Rachel edit

Rachel, NV now has a gas station and general store open on the south side of town, and also plans for a campground, RV hookup and more to open by Fall of 2021. (This comment was left by an IP user at the top of the page; I relocated it -- LJ  16:33, 7 March 2021 (UTC))Reply

A citation is needed for this addition to the article. -- LJ  16:33, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Even if true, it's more relevant to the article on Rachael than the highway. With that said, there should be something about it in the local Nye and/or Lincoln county rags.Dave (talk) 18:37, 7 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
