I can understand why some would like to scrap this antiquated medical term. Seen in a more contemporary examination, it is probably a cluster of similar syndromes rather than a literary definition of any one disease. If we started over, I think common areas of agreement would be required for an encyclopedic outline, my suggestions; 1. Nesidioblastosis represents beta cell proliferation (AKA Islet Cell Hyperplasia) of the pancreas. 2. Beta cell proliferation allows new and accelerated formation of GLP-1, an Incretin hormone. 3. Beta cell proliferation also allows further expression of another incretin; Glucose dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide or GIP. 4. Genetic influences may be assayed by measuring Insulin Promoter Factor 1 or PDX-1. The encoding gene for humans is lpf1.
