There is some strangeness here-- double entries for places such as Barngalow, Bogie Cottage, Clark Peyton Cottage, Coulter Cottage, Denny Cottage, etc., etc. These are all cases where the property is in a town and a village (NY has "towns" that are like other state's "townships"). For example, each point in Saranac Lake Village is in one of three towns: Harrietstown, North Elba, or St. Armonds (which also puts each point in one of two counties). So a decision should be made whether to go with the village (preferable, in my opinion) or the town(ship). [Note: the one advantage of using the town is that towns, unlike villages, are never split across counties. Trouble is that people generally think village, not town.] These entries can be duplicated in the town and village articles, but should not be so here. Unless someone objects, I will start removing the duplicates, keeping the village instances. -- Mwanner | Talk 01:00, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is strange. I have been "table-izing" all counties covered in List of RHPs in NY, and I think this may be the only one with these duplications. The tables are generated by Elkman's NRHP county-table generator, which operates off the same download as the Elkman NRHP infobox generator (the latter at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/infobox.php. Checking on "Bogie Cottage" there, I see it generates two sets of infobox output, differing only by the town/village names, with the same reference number and everything else.

I think the Elkman system is deliberately creating duplicates because somehow it has two place names. In other situations, like for canals or railroads or otherwise large sites that span more than one county, it is helpful for the Elkman system to generate the duplicates. A canal like the Delaware and Hudson Canal needs to be included in a county table for each separate county that it appears in.

When I saw these duplicates in the Essex county table, I wasn't sure whether they were possibly of the "good duplicates" type in some way. But, looking at them in light of your comment (and local knowledge), i agree with you. Please do go ahead and remove duplicates. In the location, I imagine it is best to give the most specific location, i.e. the village, though perhaps you can also include the town info too.
