Etymology edit

Wikipedia is not a scientific or linguistic journal and it is not our place to be making assessments as to which theory is correct and which is not. We can only tell what we know, which is that the name is rather old, with murky history, and it has been interpreted differently and there is no definitive theory as to its provenance. Ἰβηρία edit

How was Ἰβηρία pronounced in Ancient Greek? Iberia or Iviria? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1017:B42E:7A66:F14C:6D90:8AB1:4CC7 (talk) 15:05, 23 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

The first in the ancient period, the second in the medieval period... AnonMoos (talk) 09:57, 3 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello AnonMoos Can you provide a source for that? That info and the word transformation should be added to the article. Thanks. -- 19:42, 15 May 2019 144.178.5.148
I'm sure that the changing pronunciations of the letters beta and eta in the Greek language are discussed in detail in articles such as Ancient Greek phonology etc... AnonMoos (talk) 11:07, 13 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

User:AnonMoos Can you please provide a source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.113.66.100 (talk) 18:44, 30 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I cannot provide a source about the pronunciation of the word Ἰβηρία specifically. For the pronunciation of the Greek letters β and η in general, I'm sure that there are plenty of sources on the relevant articles, and you can look at them just as well as I can. If you want the name of a book just to have the name of a book, then "Vox Graeca" W. Sidney Allen is one that I know about without looking things up. Repeated unexplained removal of content edit

IP editor(s) are repeatedly removing content without explanation. Most recent diff. This appears unconstructive as what's being removed includes referenced statements, "see also" links, pronunciation guide, image. I have posted warnings here and here. Two other editors have also been involved in reverting changes made by IPs. This is a space for discussion about whether the changes are warranted. Article may need protection if IP cannot clarify how their changes are constructive. Tacyarg (talk) 19:30, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

JOR-jə or JO-jə edit

Nardog, what was the original pronunciation of Georgia before American English? Please answer this simple question. It was JO-jə! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.30.14.88 (talk) 15:37, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
There are many rhotic varieties of English spoken in Britain, and the establishment of British colonies in North America predates the loss of syllable-final /r/ in southern England. Nardog (talk) 15:45, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
