I've been researching Jay Gould's concept he called "NOMA" for non-overlapping magisteria. I've been trying to figure whether there is a better word/concept to describe his idea that two or more disciplines can appear to talk about the same thing, yet come to different conclusions while remaining logically consistent. While Gould mentioned "art", I'm thinking of "law" as another magisteria that has its own rules about the natural world that are not identical to those of science. The simple case is that of what "facts" can be used for a "standard of proof" - the number of points of identification for finger prints or DNA to prove a match.
I would be pleased as punch if Gould invented a new term for an existing one, because of the hornet's nest Gould seems to have stirred up on this. However, none have mentioned any such duplication.
(I'm new to requesting/adding to wikipedia so I'm happy for any and all comments and criticism.)
The minimal entry for NOMA would be a reference to Gould's use of NOMA, and a pointer to magisteria/magisterium which I don't believe exist either. Mulp 5 July 2005 23:03 (UTC)
