Incorrectly named article

Shouldn't this properly be named "Museum of Roma Culture"? Romani (Romany) is the language; Roma is the name of the people. The word used in the museum's website is "romské"; anyone speak Czech here? ==ILike2BeAnonymous 07:11, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Hearing no opposition, I went ahead and changed the title, as well as all occurrences of "romany" to "Roma", both here and in the Roma people article which has a link to this one. Also cleaned up the writing, which was very obviously done by someone whose first language is not English. Hint: our language uses a lot more articles (a, an, the, etc.) than you put in. ==ILike2BeAnonymous 22:59, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

It seems I am comeing pretty late. However, as I can speak Czech I should bring more sacks to the mill. The Czech name of the Museum uses the word romské which is the genitive form of the romská adjective. The meaning is concerning/referring to/relating to Roma people/culture/language etc. etc. If the Museum was only about the language, the Czech name would be: Muzeum romského jazyka or Muzeum romštiny.

So, as ILike2BeAnonymous says that Roma is the name of the people and the Museum is about the people and their culture, I think it is correct to translate the name as "Museum of Roma Culture". --Anglos (talk) 13:02, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

info "Devastated ghetto" removed

I removed the information that Bratislavská street in Brno is a "devastated ghetto", because it is not true. I live in Brno, not too far from Bratislavska street. First, the area of the street and several other streets are inhabited by many Roma people, but the concentration does not reach even 50 per cent. Second, the streets there are not new, and some buildings are rather old, but it is not any devastated ghetto at all. Both the word devastated and ghetto are misleading. --Anglos (talk) 12:46, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Roma or Romani people

I'm afraid I too have only just discovered this article. There has been a long debate on Wikipedia about the use of Roma as opposed to Romani people. This is separate from the issue of the Romani language addressed above. Just so that there is coherence in Wikipedia, is the theme of the museum about the wider Romani population around the world or specific to Roma, principally living in continental Europe and exclusive of Sinti, Travellers etc.? The piping in the article is ambiguous. Not speaking Czech, I can't research the museum's web-page to answer this question myself.RashersTierney (talk) 10:18, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

The main theme of the museum is Roma people in central Europe, both Roma, Sinti and Valacchian as these subgroups live in the area of former Czechoslovakia. It does not omit the other groups, however a small museum like that must focus at some part of the issue. There is one permanent exposition The Story of Roma (Příběh Romů) about the modern history of Roma people in central Europe. The museum organises Romani language lessons, lectures about history and culture, and, of course, temporary exhibitions of art. It is nice to see, although it is still quite small. Well, I think it is the first museum of the kind, so one cannot expect tens of large halls with thousands of items. Eh ...
