I just removed this link. It looks useful, but it was posted by User:AcadiaMagic, which matches the domain name. Linkspam or not? --SarekOfVulcan 08:00, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I just removed a couple of links to pictures that didn't exist. Just thought the people here ought to know. - green_meklar 19:58, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

an island? edit

I looked at a map and it looks connected. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.110.221.182 (talk) 06:37, 28 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

No, there's a short bridge here.--SarekOfVulcan 16:42, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sources? edit

There's a lot of information here, and no sources what so ever (except for the geology). This article is sorely in need of a history scholar of some sort to find secondary sources for all of the claims in this article. Snoop0x7b 20:15, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree that more references are needed, and the attention of a history scholar. Some information seems quite specific, as if it were drawn from an unreferenced source.
Scholarship is definitely needed.
The Google search reference is odd, because it apparently assumes that a large number of quotes make something true. (There are almost as many hits with the same search string, but with "second largest island" subsituted for "third largest island".)
I'm not sure it makes a difference who the current residents are, except Rockefellers, who had a hand in developing it. Unless they have a hand in changing the island in some way, this smacks of fandom or self-advertising, neither of which belong in Wiki.

Plagiariazed edit

Most of this article (history section) is directly lifted from an official NPS park publication: http://www.nps.gov/acad/parkmgmt/upload/gg_sec3_cultural.pdf

As a work of the U.S. Government, it's in the public domain. I have added a link to the article at the top of the section, though -- thanks for pointing it out!--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 16:29, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Desert? edit

"Some residents stress the second syllable (/dɪˈzɜːrt/ dih-ZURT) in the French fashion ..." How is this "the French fashion? It's pronounced very differently in French, and even the stressed second syllable isn't French. In French, most syllables have similar stress, and word-final syllables are slightly lengthened. The English pronunciation of the name with the English-language stress in the second syllable is so thoroughly anglicized that nobody who speaks French would call it "the French fashion". It's a name derived from French, pronounced in the English fashion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.242.141.129 (talk) 22:54, 12 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
