March 2010 edit

I just added an image of the front office of the organization, but cannot seem to make it fit inside the section of "services". Does anyone know how I can shrink it so it fits nicely within the section? Thanks! 2009933365dianelu10 (talk) 18:25, 22 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for adding the image. In fact, I will be expanding the 'services' section this afternoon. If that is the case your picture should be able to fit nicely within the services section. If it doesn't, I will try to fix the size for you. Sasha Lam (talk) 08:47, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I found some discrepancies between times and numbers on multiple sources. On Mother's Choice 2008-2009 Annual Report, they clearly indicated that they provide a 24-hour hotline service under the Pregnant Girls' Services section; however, on the website, it states that its hotline only operates from 9:00am - 10:00pm daily. I have decided to pick the more conservative number to incorporate on the wiki page.

On the other hand, it is stated that the Baby Care Service (under Child Care Homes) was established in 1990 on the leaflet, but 1988 on the website. Sasha Lam (talk) 14:52, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The conservative option is a good idea. On another note, do you think we should link this article to the Chinese version where Mother's Choice Hong Kong is translated in the current English article (i.e. 母親的抉擇)? Diane Lu 07:47, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps we should, is it considered to be an internal link or external link for Chinese Wikipedia pages? Sasha Lam (talk) 13:09, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Should I change the layout for the "Supporters" part? Does it look too messy now? Maybe I should make a table for it(Two columns, one for the supporter's name and the other for any additional informaion).2009200718macy10 (talk) 15:43, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The layout for the "Supporters" part seems fine to me, but a table to make it look more sleek is good. I actually think the formatting for the Events and Services sections need work. Maybe there should be more distinction between the header size and the size of the subheaders... It seems hard to digest the information. Shouls/can we insert indents or tables to make it seem more organized? Diane Lu 07:47, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
I am actually thinking about the past events section too. Do you think we should take away the numberings for objectives and activities - by that i mean instead of using a listing format, put it into sentences? Would that be more coherent with the rest of the page? Sasha Lam (talk) 13:09, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I suppose taking away the numbers and actually explaining it might make the page look better and less long -- the longer the page, the less likely:: Okay I'll try to turn the numbered list into sentences. Though I don't know how to make a table! I'll try!147.8.51.66 ([[User a user will be interested in scrolling down and reading... I am currently playing around with the format to make the article look tighter. Feel free to change anything. Okay I'll try to turn the list into sentences! Maybe I can make a table for the "supporters" part, but I'll probably need some time learning how to create a table!2009200718macy10 (talk) 04:12, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I tried emailing the centre again for pictures of their service centres and facilities, but I have not got any replies. Do you think that one picture Diane posted is enough? Or should I call? I want to put the Board of Directors on this page but I only know the names I cannot find exactly what they do.. is that okay or do I have to research more? 2009549982Alison10 (talk) 22:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

For the time being I think it's alright to just list the board of directors out. One picture seems fine for me, even though one or two more would be better. All we can do is to wait for Mother's Choice's reply now. By the way I think it's also important to make the whole page consistent by using numbers instead of words (2 instead of two). So please try to pay attention to this when editing? Thanks! 2008030283monique10 (talk) 16:10, 25 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I do agree with making the article consistent. For writing though, the general rule is to spell out numbers (i.e. 2 becomes "two") until the number reaches three digits or something complicated. I've been trying to make such changes throughout the article. Diane Lu (talk) 01:56, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Working on that right now and doing some general proofreading! Will let you all know when it's done. Sasha Lam (talk) 11:35, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I tried putting the chairmen and CEO names, etc. onto the box on the right, but it will not show up. I also edited parts of the Services but none of the changes saved. Can someone tell me what I did wrong? So sorry! Alison Lau 00:31, 26 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2009549982Alison10 (talkcontribs)

OK I figured out how to put the names on, but I can't seem to put the foundation year on this! They have not yet emailed me about how the organization is managed, but I will put up the Board of Directors tonight! Thanks! Alison Lau 00:37, 26 March 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2009549982Alison10 (talkcontribs)

I don't think the organization should be contacted for how it is managed for editorial independence's sake. Board of directors generally do not need descriptions. We only need names and titles as we see in other Wiki articles. Many Boards have similar roles, so the public would already have a sense of what the directors are in charge of. Also, I tried changing the "key people" in the box to "Key officers" because it sounds more professional, but when I tried doing so, the whole section would disappear. Would anyone like to do the change for me? Thanks!! Diane Lu (talk) 01:56, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
yeah Alison I think you can just type up the names for the Board of Directors and leave out the rest. That'll be enough I guess. Board of Directors do more or less the same managerial stuff in every organization.2009200718macy10 (talk) 08:27, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have the same problem with the wiki box on the right. I kept editing it but it will just disappear. Don't worry I will do it, change 'key people' to 'key officers'. I want to add Foundation year but it won't let me, but I will be responsible for that box! Let me know if you want to add anything. Alison Lau (talk) 04:21, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have had difficulties regarding that info box too! I tried adding the foundation year / founded year to that box when I first created it. But it wouldn't appear no matter how I altered the code! For once it did appeared but was gone after a few refreshes. I am not sure as to what we've done wrong... :( I am going to try again later on. I created the infobox according to this wikipedia instruction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_organization I will try to find a solution to this. Sasha Lam (talk) 15:33, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I just found an infobox that is dedicated to non-profit organizations. I will try to use this type of formatting to see if it helps with making the contents of our infox visible. Sasha Lam (talk) 15:44, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Infobox has been amended to show the founded year and the founders. Does it look okay now? Sasha Lam (talk) 15:53, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just added two links for the "External Links" part, one is the official website, the other links to the videos of the short film making competition held by Mother's Choice a few years ago.Macy Tong (talk) 03:53, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

That is a good idea! For the short film making competition, I think we can elaborate on it because it is quite important to teach young people about their future if they have a baby because it actually involves the students to participate in making the videos, directly enhancing their awareness through this event. I will do more research on it and edit it later, is this okay? Alison Lau (talk) 04:21, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have already included the film making competition in the "Past Events and Functions" part. Of course you can edit it if you have more information about the event! It's always good to elaborate more on the meanings / objectives of their activities.Macy Tong (talk) 08:31, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can someone help me type Dr. Rosanna Wong's Chinese Name (from the board of directors) please? I can't seem to type it right. Alison Lau (talk) 07:44, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I tried typing her name out but failed. In the end I found her wikipedia page and managed to get hold of her name on the references part. Here you go- "王䓪鳴" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosanna_Wong Sasha Lam (talk) 11:35, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I also found another article relating to teenage pregnancies and Mother's Choice. This was an incident which happened last year regarding a 14 year old mother 'boasting' about her pregnancy online. She was a resident of Mother's Choice back then. Originally I thought this would be a good addition to the 'controversy' part, but after some thorough thinking - perhaps there aren't much controversy associated with this. Here is the link of the article http://asianuniverse.net/forums/14_years_old_mother_boasts_her_pregnancy_online_in_Hong_Ko_t130182.html Sasha Lam (talk) 14:22, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

It seems that Mother's Choice was just follwoing her case. I guess the main focus of the news is that the girl was boasting her pregnancy even though she was just 14. If there's not much controversy, I think we can ignore it. If we include the event in our page, we may need more sources(from takungpao?).Macy Tong (talk) 14:33, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Do you think you can find any articles about it, relating to Mother's Choice actions after this? It is a very controversial case because Mother's Choice, in my opinion, should have some responsibility to this case, especially when she took photos INSIDE the hostel. They should have paid more attention to the girl and have some knowledge about it. So it will be very interesting and appropriate to put on the article if you can find more backup information about this case e.g. what Mother's Choice did before/after this case and the public's reaction to it. Alison Lau (talk) 14:47, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I will try to look around on the internet and databases. I remembered this piece of news were all over the newspapers last year. The girl should have given birth by now - there might be a few newspaper regarding this. I will check but I feel that the majority of newspaper covering this incident are in Chinese. Therefore finding a reliable (and worthy) English source might be very difficult. But I do agree that Mother's Choice should take some kind of responsibility into making sure, even though they are willing to go with whatever the girl decides to do with the pregnancy, that the girl knows the subsequent consequences and that underage pregnancy / sex is not something to be proud of. I will update here if I managed to find anything regarding this incident. Sasha Lam (talk) 15:30, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I saw this case too.. I considered entering it under controversy... but aren't many young pregnancies controversies?? However, pictures being taken IN the hostel in an interesting issue... If any articles come up that's significant enough, then I guess we could add it. Diane Lu (talk) 17:00, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

For the part about Mother's Love AIDS Care Program, I mentioned that the program received favorable comment from the provincial Centre for Disease Control. That was from Mother's Choice's report, but I don't know what exactly is the "favorable comment". Would this be too subjective? Should I change this line?Macy Tong (talk) 14:33, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Macy since the report said "favorable comment", I think it would be okay. But perhaps it would be better if you put "favorable comment" in quotes and cite it. 2008030283monique10 (talk) 14:41, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't see anything wrong with it. It is a favourable comment by the Centre then it is a fact, we are merely reporting it as it is! Alison Lau (talk) 15:02, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I still find some numbers (instead of spelled words) in the article. I'll change them according to Diane! 2008030283monique10 (talk) 14:42, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please do not change the ones that are linked with '-year-old' because it is the correct format. You can change other stand alone numbers. e.g. "12-year-old" or "5-year-old" is correct. Thanks. Sasha Lam (talk) 15:14, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have also found a link to the article which Diane extracted from LexisNexis (reference number 30) on The Standard. Does it make a difference if we put in the actual link to the article online under references? For your reference: Here is the article link: (http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?we_cat=4&art_id=50105&sid=14706827&con_type=1&d_str=20070730&fc=1) Sasha Lam (talk) 15:18, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I updated this already. Thanks for the article!Diane Lu (talk) 17:00, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

So I have an issue with the Supporters section. How do we cite this and I'm pretty sure there are more supporters of Mother's Choice than these select few. Should we mention that these were the only ones mentioned for 2008-09? Diane Lu (talk) 17:00, 27 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I found all their supporters from the report we got. You're right, I just added a line saying that Mother's Choice received support from these organizations in the year 2008-2009. Hope that sounds okay.Macy Tong (talk) 04:51, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
