Stag edit

I note from aerial imagery that the stag is verging on indiscernible now. At some point we may need to use the word 'formerly'. Geopersona (talk) 15:53, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Even an image of how it once looked might be useful here? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:01, 28 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Battle of Gilzen edit

There is an account, from Notes and Queries (1877, here. But no mention of "a battle" as such. Most sources suggest it was "against the French". So presumably this was during the War of the First Coalition. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:26, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

That seems like a safe assumption. I've added a link to the Low Countries theatre of the War of the First Coalition. Zacwill (talk) 21:49, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
That seems perfectly reasonable. It's not easy to guess from where Aberdeenshire Council may have soured their information. I have slightly extended the link. Please revert of you think that's unjustified. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:07, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The story seems to go back to Andrew Jervise's Epitaphs and Inscriptions in the North East of Scotland, which is quoted in your Notes and Queries link and also cited in the article. Jervise must have picked it up locally. There was apparently once a memorial to the unfortunate sergeant in the church of Strichen, but it is no longer to be seen. Ah yes, Andrew Jervise. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
