What is Modular Design in computers?

Same as modular design in other things (eg cars, fridges, even furniture). The idea is to build things of easily replacable parts, with standardized interfaces. A computer actually is one of the best examples of modular design - typical modules are psu, processor, mainboard, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, etc. All are easily interchangeable, as long as you get one that supports the same standard as the one you replaced. "Computers, in fact, are the first systems in which modularity in architecture was implemented". LOL Sorry. Eli Whitney is credited with the introduction of interchangeable parts in manufacturing. Modular design has been around a long, long time.

I'm thinking a read of "Structured Design" by Yourdon before doing a rewrite this tripe. Something that includes the concepts of coupling and cohesion.

I'm sorry, Reference desk, but this is my first time calling out a bad section in a wikipedia article. I could not find where to create my own comment.

Who said there is no modularity in cars? This section seems to have been written by somebody who has little to no real knowledge on the subject. Auto manufacturers still use many of the same parts from model to model and year to year with changes being made only to add-on components or replaceable internals. Engines, in particular are often used in several different models with the only difference being bolt-on modifications or even just computer programming. You will have multiple vehicles with the same block but slight modifications to the head or piston design. Injectors, coils, and many other parts are also interchangeable. In several instances with vehicles less than five years old, I have put Honda parts on Acura vehicles, for instance, because the parts are identical save for the branding but with a large price markup on the Acura part. I have had similar recent experiences with Toyota/Lexus as in both cases, the same motor company manufactures both makes, the only difference being Lexus is Toyota's sport/luxury and Acura is the sme for Honda. Hell, the Cadillac Escalade is just a luxury version of the Suburban using many of the same components under the hood, differing mainly in trim and sensors to better control the suspension. The components of the suspension itself are identical. Article Expansion

I noticed this article was classified as a stub; it does seem a little short. I specialize in modular buildings myself, so I was thinking of adding a section called "Modular design in construction" or something like that. Then we could add a section for computers, using the response above, and maybe cut and paste that abrupt paragraph about modular design in a car and give that its own section as well. I think that would clean things up a bit and also help to expand and illustrate the subject. Any suggestions? ModManDan (talk) 22:27, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

I think this article has a long way to go before its is satisfactory. The introduction is less than clear, many of the statements appear to be opinions, and the various sub-paragraphs do not cohere. Time for a revamp, I reckon! Arrivisto (talk) 19:22, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
