@Brett and BoyTheKingCanDance:, any objections to redirecting this to Modality (linguistics)? Wikishovel (talk) 14:25, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi dear Wikishovel. That seems like a logical solution. Good with me. BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 14:27, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Modality is a property of language generally. So a clause can express modality. But a subset of words also express modality. We have an entry for modal verbs, for example. Why not an entry for the larger set that modal verbs belong to? --Brett (talk) 14:33, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, but isn't that exactly what Modality (linguistics) is about? Wikishovel (talk) 14:34, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Could you clarify? What does "that" refer to here?--Brett (talk) 14:43, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Isn't "words which express modality" exactly what Modality (linguistics) is about? Wikishovel (talk) 15:03, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
No, it's not just about individual words. It's about utterances, statement, clauses, etc. Long live the king is modal without including a single modal word.--Brett (talk) 15:09, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
