Another possible origin of the name edit
The carbonated beverage called "soda" or "pop" in much of the US is sometimes called "tonic" in eastern Massachusetts. A local company, Miscoe Spring Beverage Co, Inc., 89 Northbridge Road, Mendon, MA 01756, is or was a maker of carbonated beverages, which was sometimes called "Miscoe Tonic." Mendon is not far from Providence. The obvious connection seems to be uncodumented. Snezzy (talk) 02:14, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
In addition, there are two brooks that flow into the Charles River that are named 'Misko Brook'. I am not an expert in any of the AMerican Indian languages, but there are are tributaries of the Housatonic River that are named Hoosac River. It was my understanding that the "tonic" ending meant that it was a real river. I believe that the original name of the Charles River was Miskatonic. I will look further into this and add sources when I find them. I believe that Lovecraft was referring to Harvard University, which is by the Charles (Miskatonic) River.
