Military qualifications

There's no verifiable support for him being SF or Ranger, and a rank of E4 at discharge would suggest he was not SF.Mzmadmike (talk) 07:16, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

MDE was not Ranger tabbed (qualified) but he did serve as a ranger in a Ranger unit as noted. His rank at the time of his Bronze Star w "V" was as a SPEC 4. The FOIA I submitted was responded to and it showed he'd been busted down a rank (to PFC) while recovering from his wounds at Letterman Army Hospital. Sorry for the initial "blast" of information - appreciate the help in narrowing it down so it is as accurate as allowable at this time GWalker Walkergreg (talk) 00:16, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Mike - I'll be going through the Wiki page on Echanis over the next few weeks and cleaning it up / shortening it. It's taken 35 years for an accurate accounting - referenced and endorsed/supported by the Echanis Family and those close to Mike at the time - to become available.

Thanks for the patience - should be alot easier to read / cleaner when I'm done. Please review as you can and give it that fine editor's eye from your end.

Mike - major edits for brevity made. Echanis is actually a noted figure of historical note to both the martial arts world (Recent induction into the Black Belt Hall of Fame) and the history of Nicaragua as President Somoza was being forced from power both politically and by armed revolution. Echanis is mentioned in several respected books on this period of history (1978) due to his direct involvement and actions both during the National Palace take-over by the Sandinistas and his inter-action with President Somoza while this event was taking place. Numerous U.S. and foreign newspapers reported on his death (Echanis) in 1978 with follow on major print stories in both Black Belt and Soldier of Fortune magazines as well as the ABC "Nightline" story aired several years after his death. Will continue to whittle away at the current content as appropriate, and fill in some additional citations for reference. As the result of a fully documented recommendation packet presented to Black Belt Magazine by Greg Walker with the direct assistance and support of the Echanis Family, Michael D. Echanis was selected as the publication's Weapons Instructor of the Year (2013).
