Talk:Michael, Isle of Man

Latest comment: 6 years ago by InternetArchiveBot in topic External links modified (January 2018)

I am starting to think that the Kirk Michael, Isle of Man page should be merged with this one. What does anyone else think? and which should be the main page? Dabbler 15:57, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I agree, at the present time anyway. It would then be similar to the Onchan page, as it mentions both the village and parish. However, the information could get too large quite fast - as I intend to dig out some of my old research into the parish/village and post some more information on the subjects - this could be a couple of months though. This should be the main page as it is the larger area and therefore subject area. -localzuk 16:18, 22 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Road edit

I don't like this sentence:

It lies across the main road between the towns of Peel to the south and Ramsey to the north and east. The Isle of Man TT course runs along the road.

It is factually incorrect as the parish contains the tt/main road and also the peel/kirk michael coast road. Also, it is badly formed. I can't think of how to re-format it to convey the information correctly... -localzuk 15:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

District? edit

Why has this page been moved from Michael (parish) to here? The terms used on the island are sheading, parish etc... (and as such the signs when entering these areas reflect this. The article discusses the parish, going into detail about the parish church etc... I do not see why it has been moved. -Localzuk (talk) 12:59, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Look at the Local government in the Isle of Man article. Michael is a district not parish.Manxy3 13:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think you will find that Michael is a parish and has been for many centuries... Hence the 'parish church' and the village of 'Kirk Michael' (parish village). The article you link to is of no use as far as I can see - it has no references and does not make any statements about Michael being a district...
Michael is a Parish and a Sheading (each having different boundaries. Also, if you look at the reference on this article, to the Manx Notebook [1] you will notice it is called a parish and is discussed as such. The only references to it being a 'District' (this being a term I have only seen on this article so far - and I lived on the Island for 11 years), and the linked pdf 'Building control districts and parishes of the IOM' - which doesn't say which is which.
All the evidence that is currently available states that Michael is and always has been a Parish and a Sheading. Can you provide external references to this? -Localzuk (talk) 14:44, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Here is a website [2] regarding the local election which refers to Michael District Commissioners and everywhere else as Commissioners or Town or Parish Commissioners except in Onchan. The IOM gov. website says that there are two "Districts". From http://www.isleofman.com/factfile/government.htm I see "The Island has seventeen parishes - Andreas, Arbory, Ballaugh, Braddan, Bride, German, Jurby, Lezayre, Lonan, Malew, Marown, Maughold, Michael, Onchan, Patrick, Rushen and Santon - although by virtue of their larger populations Michael and Onchan are deemed, for local government purposes, as Districts. For this reason Laxey, Port St Mary and Port Erin also have their own District Commissioners while Castletown, Peel and Ramsey have Town Commissioners and Douglas, being the largest of all, has a Corporation, headed by a MAYOR.". Looks like District has some validity in law if not common speech. Dabbler 15:28, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ah, that seems to be the confusion. When I wrote the article originally, it was based on information about Michael as a parish. It seems that this should be cleared up in the article :) -Localzuk (talk) 16:56, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I added some stuff on the relationship to the sheading/constituency. If Michael is referred to as a district only for local government purposes, and is more generally known as a parish, shouldn't this article be called Michael (parish) rather than Michael District? Good point, the area is more commonly known as the parish of Michael. Our policies say we should go with the common usage and having lived in Kirk Michael for at least 12 years I would have to say I have never heard of it being called 'Michael District'.-Localzuk (talk) 16:33, 6 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why does this keep on being moved? edit

So far it has been Michael (parish), Michael District and now this. Why is it now using this format?-Localzuk(talk) 19:48, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
