Why is "internet meme" included here? Is it considered a sub-category of the top meaning of meme? As far as I know, an internet meme is just a regular meme being spread on the internet, and should not have its own listing here. Then all other types of memes, like "religion memes" should also be listed here. // Nirion (talk) 17:36, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • The main argument might be that for many people, "Internet meme" is the default definition — they might not even have been aware of the generic concept before they heard of "such-and-such meme."   Lenoxus " * " 01:09, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's a very old post ... but I came here to say roughly the opposite (or the same as the reply above). I think to most people (esp. young), the primary meaning of "meme" is a stock picture with a variable text, used to comment on something or as a joke, sometimes going viral on the internet. (To qualify, I think the stock image should be viral, used in this way with many different texts.) Clearly, this meaning is historically secondary to the meaning covered by the article meme, but as it is so commonly used, I think it should be more prominently shown in the dab atricle.
