Name

Could someone provide a source that says their name is really Melos Ensemble of London? The record sleeves I've looked at read simply Melos Esemble. If that is indeed the group's name, the article shold be moved to that title. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:38, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

On top of that I wonder about the categories 1950 births and living people, - it's not about the life of those people. I'll look for a source for the name but would be quite happy with the short version.--Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:16, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Having looked a bit closer I found just Melos Ensemble on older recordings. I guess of London was added later to distinguish, I found a singing Melos-Ensemble or Melos Ensemble Wien ... I suppose when I wrote this I was working from the Gervase de Peyer webpage [2], and I probably thought 'if he says that's what it was called, who am I to argue?' - sort of thing... ! Eebahgum (talk) 22:45, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

So far I didn't find a source for the following assumption: The Ensemble had no name first in 1950, then Melos Ensemble (maybe as late as 1952, because that is also found as founding year, de Peyer: "gelled into the Melos Ensemble"), and was specifically called Melos Ensemble of London for the reformed group in 1974, quite likely because other groups had imitated the idea and the name. The Oiseau-Lyre pressing of the Hummel Septet in D- op 74 coupled with Quintet in Eb op 87, SOL 290, a 12" vinyl record distributed by Decca, was issued in 1966. I have a copy of this in (what I take to be) its original form and the name 'The Melos Ensemble of London' is written clearly across the middle of the front of the sleeve. On the reverse, the listing of the music is in each case followed by the personnel listed as:

• Septet: 'THE MELOS ENSEMBLE OF LONDON - Richard Adeney (Flute); Peter Graeme (Oboe); Neill Sanders (Horn); Cecil Aronowitz (Viola); Terence Weil (Cello); Adrian Beers (Double bass); Lamar Crowson (Piano).'
• Quintet: 'THE MELOS ENSEMBLE OF LONDON - Emanuel Hurwitz (Violin); Cecil Aronowitz (Viola); Terence Weil (Cello); Adrian Beers (Double bass); Lamar Crowson (Piano).'
• The same texts and listings appear in exactly the same form on either side of the record itself, on the labels. Nowhere on this 1966 record is the group referred to at any time simply as 'The Melos Ensemble'. It appears, therefore, that in 1966 (mid-way through the first period of its existence), in its most widely-distributed public presentation, with many founding personnel, the group was calling itself The Melos Ensemble of London. On the other hand, on the old Decca vinyl box set of the War Requiem, 1963, it is just 'The Melos Ensemble' both on the record labels and in the booklet accompanying the records.
