Birth date edit

As this is a content discussion, I have copied the following from my talk page, and the discussion should be continued here.

==Mehwish Hayat==

Hi Rwessel, I don't know how Wikipedia works . Saw you edited some information about me on page "Mehwish Hayat" . Need your help regarding an issue/error . I don't even know if this message of mine will get through to you or not.. But if it does please Do get back to me as it's very important . Thanks ! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissHayat (talkcontribs) 23:07, 30 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@MissHayat: Hi. What's the issue? If this is about content of an article, it's best to post on the article's talk page, Talk:Mehwish Hayat in this case (but continue here for the moment, if necessary I'll move this discussion there). In general, to post a new request on any talk page, go to that talk page and start a new section by using the "New section" button at the top (this will create a new section at the bottom of the talk page). To reply in an existing section, click on the "edit" button at the top of that section. Please remember to sign your posts with ~~~~. Since the article is about a person, our policies Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons are strictly applied, and since this article is about you, please be aware of the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guidelines. == Hi back ! ==

Thankyou for your prompt response. Good to hear from you . The issue is that the date of birth and age mentioned on Wikipedia is misquoted and has been misleading my fans who trust wiki with their lives . I believe it's important to get the correct information across and Keeping that in mind I I even mentioned this in one of my recent interviews With "The News" which is an authentic and a reliable source . Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).http://tns.thenews.com.pk/inteview-with-mehwish-hayat-what-the-cat-says/#.Vq5VTUXXenN Where I clearly mentioned that Wikipedia has been misquoting my age . But I don't know how Wikipedia works .. I thought you could help me with this so I wrote to you . Please go through the article and let me know what can be done . I would really appreciate . ThanksMissHayat (talk) 23:05, 1 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Also please let me know is there any other way to contact you such as email ? Wikipedia is really complicated . I've been trying to write back so many times but not sure if it's getting through . ThanksMissHayat (talk) 23:05, 1 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

At the moment, no birthday is cited in the article, so there's no rush to fix it. For starters, there *is* a source for the 6-Jan-1986 date, namely here. Now this looks like a blog or some other sort of user generated content, so we should probably not be citing it per WP:RS. I think we can use the TNS (which looks a lot more like a real news site) interview with Mehwish Hayat as a sufficiently reliable source to establish age 25 (at least at approximately the publication date of the TNS article, which was November 22, 2015). We can do an "{{Age as of date|25|2015|11|22}}" (which would result in: "33–34") from that, but it would be better the have an actual birthday (and again, we need a reliable, independent source). The article *used* to say January 6, but if the year was incorrect, I have no faith in the day. So if @MissHayat: has a source (again, meeting WP:RS) for the day, I'll put that in, otherwise, we can just add the Age as of date.
And to MissHayat: You can send me a private email via Wikipedia by going to my user page (user:rwessel), and clicking on "Email this user" under "Tools" on the left side of the screen. But, it's best to keep discussion about articles *on* Wikipedia (and specifically on the article talk take (IOW, *here*), so there's a record. So if there's an issue you'd like to discuss that you do not want recorded on Wikipedia, you can email me, and I'll try to help (or at least try to point you in the right direction), but so far there's nothing in *this* discussion which shouldn't be here.
When you reply, hit the edit button at the top of this section (next to the "Birth date"), and then add your reply under here. Use one more colon to indent your reply under mine (so you'd start on the next line with "::what you want to say"). Rwessel (talk) 01:40, 2 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
hi Rwessel . You're right . The source that mentioned the wrong age is user generated and not authentic and people at times share the incorrect information without verification and wrong info gets spread easily . The reason why I want this to be corrected . The article I mentioned is hundred percent authentic As it belongs to "The news" which is one of the leading news based publication of Pakistan . and I was interviewed in November 2015 where I specifically mentioned how Wikipedia has been misquoting my age . My birthday was on the 6th of January and makes Me 26 now . I just checked my wiki page and it still mentions wrong birthdate and continues to mislead my fans and followers . Kindly please look into it and make much needed amendments . Would highly appreciate Rwessel . Thanks a lot !!! 😊 MissHayat (talk) 20:48, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Birth Year confusions edit

@Cyphoidbomb, Arjayay, Ravensfire, CycloneYoris, Glane23, and Jip Orlando: Before yesterday (6 December 2021) the subject's birth year was listed as 1983 sourced using reliable refs Pakistan Today and Gulf News. Now, yesterday, the subject posted that she has turned 33 in her verified Instagram page (WP:SPS), and all of a sudden multiple IPs and users started adding the SPS. Today Itsadnanhere added two sources from Dawn and Tribune, both dated 7 January that are nothing but regurgitation of all of the things that the subject had posted in her WP:SPS Instagram post including her age only 33 making her birth year 1988, thus rendering the new sources unreliable (WP:SOURCE FRUIT). In my opinion the recent edits [1] should be reverted since it is dependent on SPS that too recently written. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:21, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

What! An actress suddenly being 5 years younger! - I'm afraid it happens a lot - I agree that the WP:SPS is suspect, but we all know that the fans will believe what the subject says. Some time ago, I tried using a date range on person (a musician I seem to remember) where the sources disagreed, but the fans kept removing the older age. It might be worth trying ? - Arjayay (talk) 17:03, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
All this (see prior discussions on this Talk page) is why I tend to just delete the age/date of birth whenever an article subject objects. Perhaps the young and restless amongst the actors will calm down once they reach the career milestones of a Helen Mirren, Dame Judy Dench or (the late) Sean Connery. Geoff | Who, me? 17:17, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Fylindfotberserk: One thing I notice is that in this edit from March 2019, we see the introduction of phrasing: "Her mother, Rukhsar Hayat, was a popular TV actress during the 80s, her eldest brother Zeeshan is a singer-composer, and her younger sister Afsheen is a singer as well." That same phrasing is found in this November 2019 Gulf News slideshow, which could suggest that Ashfaq Ahmed, Senior Assistant Editor of Gulf News, copied content from Wikipedia, and that content could also have included her birth date. (I don't see anything at the Wayback Machine to suggest they published this earlier). So, it might be tricky to suss this out, but that one ref looks circular. One of the reasons why I don't like slideshows as references, is that you often don't know who's assembling them, and even when we do, like here, it feels like content that someone cranked out in a hurry, which might explain the copying. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:40, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Cyphoidbomb: But this Pakistan Today source dated Jan 1, 2018 mentions her "35th birthday". - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:46, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yep, not surprised that a celebrity would try to make herself appear younger. I am a little concerned about the circularity of the source as Cyphoidbomb said above. Don't bother searching Google news for 'mehwish hayat birth' because you won't find much other than celebrity rags breathlessly reporting on her glamor and beauty. Still, I found this: [2] which has her birthday mentioned. I can't stand gossip papers and who knows if it was sourced from Wikipedia. There certainly appears to be much more information (sparse as it is) about her birthday being in 1983 versus the subjects' tweet yesterday celebrating her '33rd year.' Absent anything else, we should keep the birth year 1983. Jip Orlando (talk) 18:22, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
It may be seen as too WP:POINTY but could we state the earlier WP:reliable sources giving the 1983 date, followed by her later claim of 1988, and let the readers decide ? - Arjayay (talk) 22:18, 7 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Arjayay and Cyphoidbomb: Yeah, a similar arrangement like the Disha Patani, Mariah Carey articles can be made. With explanation in the body like this. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 07:04, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Maybe, but I'm worried that doing so will present undue weight to a WP:SPS. We don't rely on tweets and IMDB postings as reliable sources. At the minimum, we should only accept the 1988 date with another, preferably reliable, source stating so. It might come across as POINTY and tongue-in-cheek to say 'RS's report 1983, but the subject has said 1988 [citation needed],' or something. The article currently has both dates- should we revert to 1983 with an editnote saying to see the discussion here? Jip Orlando (talk) 15:31, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Jip Orlando: I've restored to the non-SPS sourced version with an edit summary about this discussion. There is no point in having that in the article. At best an SPS can be kept with context, alongwith the RS. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:42, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your Subject about the confusion of Birth Year Actually i know Instagram Sources are unreliable But From the website sources Which i have mentioned Mehwish Hayat 33 Birthday is proof of this that the mehwish hayat Birth Year is 1988 so i think if you where approve my request and add the correct date of Birth will be very Thankuflly for you :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itsadnanhere (talkcontribs) 06:43, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Here is the Two Recently Sources about the 33 Birthday Celebration of Mehwish Hayat Khan its mean the correct Birth Year is 1988 [1] And the second [2]

And From the Official Twitter Account i can see Her Birth Year is Listed 1988 You can Also check here https://twitter.com/MehwishHayat Now The Decision is in Your Hand

These sources are just regurgitating what the subject said in her social media posts (including her Twitter Handle), which are WP:SPSes, thus rendering them unreliable as per WP:SOURCE FRUIT. If you have few years older source(s) mentioning different birthyears, you can list them here, We can discuss it. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 08:00, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Atsme: I've restored your OTRS edits after proper arrangement of other sources, which were getting ref tag errors after your edits. Would you kindly elaborate what actually happened? As you can see in this section, we had a discussion on how all of a sudden sources started quoting her 1988 birth year after she posted that in her social media handles (on her birth day), thus contravening policies like WP:SPS and WP:SOURCE FRUIT, not to mention the sources like Amazon are not reliable. Pinging users involved in the discussion @Cyphoidbomb, Arjayay, Jip Orlando, and Glane23:. Also in cases of contention, we can have arrangements like the Mariah Carey article (multiple birth years). - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 10:33, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
OTRS received private correspondence that verifies the birth date as 1988. Cyphoidbomb was correct in his thoughts that the dob was originally a mistake that went viral. I can't find the ticket # at this moment but will provide it here when I do so that other OTRS agents can confirm the date if this happens again. Atsme 💬 📧 10:44, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I wonder what value Wikipedia policies like WP:SPS, WP:Independent, WP:SOURCE FRUIT have if all these celebs and their cohorts can complain to OTRS to get their articles "fixed" as per their wishes. I also wonder why they didn't try it all these years, now all of a sudden after that tweet in January 2021. The slideshow may be a wrong reference as Cyphoidbomb has put, but this Pakistan Today source and this one mention her birth year as 1983, and both her pre-2021. We would need reliable sources for this new change instead of Amazon, SPSes or their copies, IMO pre 2021 RS sources. Also considering that this is a contentious matter, it might be suitable to remove DoB altogether for the sake of neutrality. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:31, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
The OTRS Ticket#2019012910004299 for future reference. OTRS has corroborated the information with an official document. Not all actors/actresses are being deceitful about their age. When someone can provide verifiable evidence, why would we reject it for an inaccurate date in an online article or in a book? That's why we have OTRS. It is not uncommon for incorrect information to be published in WP, and then go viral. It could've been something as simple as the 3 in 1983 on a document not being completely closed to be an 8, or perhaps someone with poor vision didn't realize it was an 8. Sorry, but I don't have that much faith when material is not corroborated by an official record of some sort. I agree with you that editors do face issues when determining DOB and DOD, but we shouldn't overlook the potential for error and use our judgement wisely. I cited a few sources that reflect the correct DOB, so that in addition to the OTRS correspondence, the date is verifiable. Atsme 💬 📧 12:48, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I had a conversation about this with an OTRS volunteer about two years ago (I think), and I believe they said that OTRS no longer does this sort of verification. I don't know if that has changed. Also, per WP:BLPPRIMARY, we typically don't use government records for this sort of thing. Also note that sometimes government records can be wrong or in conflict, such as with Khaleda Zia#Birth date discrepancy, whose DOB appears differently on various government records. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:39, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
1988 is the only corroborated date with an official document. Having an official government record to corroborate a published DOB or DOD is far more reliable than simply using media sources to corroborate each other. I don't have a problem using a published date cited to media that is also corroborated with an official document for WP's purposes. As editors, our concern ends after we've established verifiability. We are neither investigative reporters seeking truth - perhaps a little refresher read at WP:V may prove helpful, specifically Do not leave unsourced or poorly sourced material in an article if it might damage the reputation of living people. As an OTRS agent, I am quite familiar with WMF's position when BLPs write in with a complaint about misinformation, and/or other problems. The job of an OTRS agent is to fix the problem, especially when BLP issues are coming down the chain of command starting with legal. In this case, we have published sources that are corroborated with an official document, so my work is done. OTRS has enough information to verify the 1988 date. Happy editing! Atsme 💬 📧 15:15, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
The nitty-gritty of BLP isn't exactly my area of expertise; I understand more of the broad strokes. You have more familiarity with OTRS matters than I, so I'm yielding to your expertise here. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:54, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Cyphoidbomb: In that case should we use one of those WP:SOURCE FRUITY sources, atleast they are from "reliable media". I'm not comfortable with Amazon as a source. Second, do we have to put a note beside the birth year in the infobox mentioning the OTRS for future reference? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 17:04, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Ask Atsme!   I would tend to agree that you should use a major source, and a hidden note with the OTRS details seems reasonable in the markup. You might also consider including this information in your edit summary as well, as it can help you spot it faster in case it gets deleted. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:30, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cool, if a reliable source reports the DOB as 1988 than that is fine with me. For some background, the article's subject posted her birth year as 1988 (or more clearly, said she is 'celebrating her 33rd year') on insta-twit-face blah-blah. We had a swath of IPs that tried to change the birth year to 1988 while citing said social media. Doesn't matter to me either way, just trying to preserve BLP and V. I went ahead and changed the date in the lede so all dates match up. Thank you @Atsme: and @Cyphoidbomb: for your help with this! Jip Orlando (talk) 16:40, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Cyphoidbomb: Replaced Amazon with a news agency source plus added a hidden text on OTRS in the infobox. Corrected birth year category as well. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Excellent - thank you! Atsme 💬 📧 16:56, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pride of performance award in Oslo edit

mehwish hayat got pride of performance award from Oslo's prime minister and her speech back there got a very magnificent response and afterwards her interviews came where she talked about the matters regarding kashmir and Bollywood's incessant instigation and portrayal of Pakistan as a villainous country.
