Infobox

I have corrected the most obvious flaws in the infobox. However, I think the country infobox format is quite inappropriate and cumbersome for French overseas territories. It would be better to create a dedicated Template:French_overseas_territories_infobox which would be used for New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna, Mayotte, and Saint Pierre et Miquelon. Mayotte incorporated into +262 country code with Reunion

As of 30 March 2007, existing Mayotte telephone numbers from other nations will be dialled as +262 269 xxxxxx, instead of +269 xxxxxx.

Paragraph on Dzaoudzi

This needs rewriting, Dzaoudzi is a rocky islet between Petite Terre and Grande Terre. This rocky islet is connected to Petite Terre by a causeway, but there is no causeway between Dzaoudzi and Grande Terre.

It`s relevant for politics, because Mayotte elected to continues as a French colony, in order to protect their catholic population, and impedes imposition from Sharia law, as it was imposed on other Comores islands. France is a laic republic = a republic where religion is a private concern. Thus, the law forbid to have statistics based on religion/belief (as well as origins, sexual orientation, ...) because this is discriminatory. —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk

Removing Broken Table-like Structure (?)

There are several reasons for my doing so

1. It is broken, though, to be fair, it was always like that

2. it is a total mess and unreadable

3. it is un-wiki

Yes, it may be useful, but what is the point if you can't even understand it? And also there seemed to be some POV in the first paragraph. Ethnic groups / religion

I'm not sure we should list such precise data for the island's ethnic and religious groups, given that the French census doesn't ask questions about either. I know we're using www.worldstatesmen.org as a source, but it's not clear where it obtained that data from. Funnyhat (talk) 04:35, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Languages

I was just wondering where the statistics for languages came from, as I assume that the source also holds statistics for Réunion, and I would like to add them. Thanks --Maurice45 (talk) 14:20, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

The Languages section appears to say that 97% of the population speaks French as a second language, then that only 55% of adults know French, then that 97% of teenage school children know French. If these conflicting figures are from different sources, perhaps that should be noted in the text. -- Craig Goodrich 206.39.12.241 (talk) 13:09, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I said in an edit summary I'd add "Mayotte is a member of the Indian Ocean Commission, with a separate membership rather than as part of the Comoros" somewhere else, but I haven't as I reckon it's now outdated, doesn't appear listes here or here anyway. Mayotte Region?

The DW article is incorrect. And as such this Wikipedia article incorrect regarding the relationship of Mayotte with the EU: "The issue is not only a problem for Mayotte and France, but also for the European Union in the foreseeable future. On January 1, 2014, Mayotte officially becomes a so-called European external region, like some French, Dutch and British territories in the Caribbean. That means that Mayotte is then a part of the European Union." This is completely incorrect.

Following a referendum in March 2009 in which 95.2% of Mahoran voters endorsed a constitutional change of status, Mayotte, an Overseas Collectivity of France, became the 101st department of France, the 5th DOM, in March 2011. However Mayotte will only become an Outermost region of the European Union on the request of the French government, and through the process outlined in Declaration 43 annexed to the Treaty of Lisbon.

'European external region' is not a phenomenon. In fact Google only links to this article as the only document to ever refer to this. If you mean 'Outermost region' as per Article 349 TFEU which refers to the four French DOM (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and Reunion - as per the French law ‘Loi n°46-451 du 19 mars 1946 tendant au classement comme départements français de la Guadeloupe, de la Martinique, de la Réunion et de la Guyane française.’) as well as the Spanish Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, and the Portuguese Autonomous Regions of the Azores and of Madeira.

The British and Dutch territories referred to in this article are 'Overseas countries and territories' (OCT) - a grouping which already includes Mayotte. A full list is attached to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union in Annex II.

The real question is whether Mayotte which is currently in association with the Union as an OCT will become a full region as per the 'Outermost regions'. And as previously mentioned this is not an inevitability. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.99.221.20 (talk) 12:59, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Importance

I was actually wondering about this.... is Mayotte really the most important island in the Comoros? For starters it's not even part of the union anymore. Neither was it the most important when it actually WAS part of it --Maurice45 (talk) 11:04, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

I think there is a different usage politically and geographically of "Comoros", the latter being the area historically known as Comoros regardless of the political status. In terms of importance, Mayotte has a much larger economy than Comoros (the state), even though it only has 1/5th the population. Relatively speaking the economy of Comoros is more akin to sub-Saharan Africa, vs. Mayotte's being on par with some of the less industrialized European countries. Even without other factors, the fact that Mayotte is leaps and bounds ahead of Comoros in terms of development makes it the most important island. Look at how many coups Comoros has had since independence. Countries which are in constant turmoil are generally not going to have much influence when it comes to world affairs. Mayotte is the farthest south and most important of the group of Comoro Islands: Mayotte (Maote), Anjuan (Inzuani), Mohilla (Moheli), and Great Comoro (Komoro, i.e. where there is fire, or Angazidya). These islands, with Nossi-Bé (large island) and Santa Maria (Nossi Burai, Nossi Ibrahim), form the archipelago known as "the Satellites of Madagascar". The Comoro Islands, with their craggy evergreen shores, look like the cones of submerged groves separated from the mainland by deep abysses. The summits are not all of the same altitude; the highest point of Mayotte is not over 1800 feet, where the highest peak of Anjuan is about 5000 feet, while the central cone of Great Comoro, whose volcanic activity is not yet exhausted, rises to over 7000 feet. Two monsoons, consequently two seasons, alternately affect the climate of the archipelago, which is sometimes visited by cyclones. The soil of these islands is very fertile, and produces in abundance vanilla, cloves, sugar-cane, coffee, etc. The total population is about 80,000, mostly African negroes, often erroneously called Makoas (a Mozambique tribe). There are also some Sakalavas from Madagascar, mostly former slaves freed when the islands were occupied by the French. This Comoro Archipelago was for many centuries an Arabian colony and was once very prosperous. As they navigated along the African coast, the merchants of Idumea and Yemen created a special and interesting type, the Comorinos. Commingled with these Arabian half-breeds, once the sole owners of the country, there are now Banians from Cutch and Hindus from Bombay, who carry on almost the entire commerce. There are also a few European or creole planters and officials from Reunion or Mauritius. In 1843 the French Government, called in by the sultan, took possession of Mayotte, which became, with Nossi-Bé, a post of surveillance over Madagascar. All these islands now form a French colony. In 1844, Mayotte, Nossi-Bé, and the Comoros were made an Apostolic prefecture and confided to the Fathers of the Holy Ghost. In 1898, when the same missionaries were given the ecclesiastical administration of Northern Madagascar, these smaller islands and Santa Maria were attached to the Apostolic Vicariate at Diego Francisco Suárez. Santa Maria and Nossi-Bé have resident missionaries; the other islands are regularly visited.

The population of these islands is largely Muslim and therefore strongly anti-Christian; for this reason little religious christian progress is made. There are actually some other religions with a small number of adherents, like the Baha'i Faith and Hinduism. There are also small groups of Buddhists. And also- what is up with the unfinished table-like structure? it may be useful in providing data but it is a mess --Maurice45 (talk) 16:02, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

The population of these islands is largely Muslim and -Therefore- strongly anti-christian, do you have any actual data to back that up? because to suggest the people of the island are very anti-christian just because they are Muslim is strange, as in the rest of France Muslims and Christians live largely in peace. Earthquake swarm

The BRGM (French government geological agency) is maintaining a page on the (continuing) earthquake swarm at for https://www.brgm.eu/content/earthquake-swarm-mayotte-scientific-faq

Currently that there is some form of volcanic activity happening east of the island is the popular opinion amongst geologists, but exactly what is happening is unclear.

As the events are current, not historical, I'm going to move the present comments into the environment section and break out a sub-heading for the geology of the islands.
