Talk:Maya (given name)

Untitled edit

I was researching the name Maya and came across this excerpt on Wikipedia: "Maya, in Hebrew, also means ("מלחמת יום הכיפורים") - "The war of Kippur" (in Judaism)." This linkage doesn't seem clear. I was unable to corroborate the connection by following the two attributions at the bottom of the page. The first source (Behind The Name [1]) contained no reference to "The war of Kippur." In the second source, The Baby Name Bible, the relevant excerpt was unavailable via Google Search view of the text, i.e. the "M" names page was not displayed.

I did find the following meanings/origins of the name Maya (or Mayah): Mayah close to God hebrew http://www.innocentenglish.com/popular-boy-girl-baby-names/baby-girls-name-database-meaning/baby-girls-names18.html

Mayah Hebrew F Close to God http://www.babynameguide.com/categoryhebrew.asp?strGender=&strAlpha=M&strCat=Hebrew&strOrder=Name

MAYA (3) Gender: Feminine Usage: Hebrew Other Scripts: מַיָּה (Hebrew) Derived from Hebrew מַיִם (mayim) "water". http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?nmd=n&terms=Maya&submit=Go

Maya is also a modern Hebrew name, probably also a variant of Greek Maia, but maybe related to Maayan (spring) and to the Aramaic word for “water”. http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Maya.html

The Hindi name Maya means - God's creative power The Greek name Maya means - mother; grandmother. The Latin name Maya means - great. A form of Maia http://www.babynamescountry.com/meanings/Maya.html

Arguably the name in western culture is mainly derived from the Greek mythology name and the use of the Greek goddess portrait in the info box would be appropriate for an English language article. I removed the info box because it interferes with the layout of all the pictures. I would prefer to restore it with the Greek goddess portrait in the info box. --Bookworm857158367 (talk) 01:51, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fiction characters name Maya. edit

I added 4 fiction characters name Maya. Three were removed. They are not non-notable. Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia and should reflect fact no matter how minor. A fictional character name Maya is still a relevant fictional character named Maya. FedualJapan (talk) 08:21, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

They are non-notable. See Wikipedia:Notability. JesseRafe (talk) 20:07, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don’t see where that supports you. If anything that article supports me. I see those there are worthy of notice by verifiable canon facts from verifiable sources and you are limiting the article by discriminating subject-specific notability. Those are 3 fictional characters named Maya that fits the criteria of the article. Those three are from popular animated shows. FedualJapan (talk) 01:14, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/tv-shows/Sofia-the-First/Princess-Maya/

https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Mary-Long/. (Voice Actor for Maya in eps 103).

https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/tv-shows/Sailor-Moon-Super-S/. If you look will see the Maya from eps 142 as Mayako with a Japanese voice actor. Cloverway made it Maya where viz and Japanese sub is Mayako.

Below is pictures of all three Maya’s. The other two are screenshots of viz episode summaries containing Maya for eps 103 and Mayako for 142. I did have pictures from Sophia season one eps 8 saying Princess Maya is voiced by Mary long but the snapshot of a black screen. However, the link above on Princess Maya or this link on Olivia Grace, has a green check mark with Maya. Should suffice enough. https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Olivia-Grace/

@FedualJapan: The reason these characters should not be added is because they are not mentioned in the relevant articles that they link to. While other minor characters are included in this list, they link to more information about them. The specific policy that applies here is WP:INDISCRIMINATE. –MJLTalk 14:50, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
    • @MJL:Thank you for explaining. So if I added the information with reliable sources. Can I add them here? I know with Sophia they mentioned some of the princesses and princes but not all. They are leaving out some. Princess Maya does appears over 10 times in four seasons. Now for the other two I am asking on the article’s talk page if we should add all the characters. Is there a link about what to add or not to add? I mean if there is 200+ characters or something. These are fictional characters in the story named Maya and I would like to have Wikipedia to reflect truth and knowledge in such areas no matter how minor the detail is but within the parameters of Wikipedia guidelines. I am trying to improve these Wikipedia articles and being proactive.— Preceding unsigned comment added by FedualJapan (talkcontribs) 15:52, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@FedualJapan: Wikipedia doesn't include every minor detail as a matter of policy. Look, assuming what you said about Princess Maya being true, the first step is to add her to List of Sofia the First characters. Once that is done, then you could add her here with a link to her entry there. –MJLTalk 16:11, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Thank you. I did say within the parameters of Wikipedia guidelines. I am aware Wikipedia doesn’t. And if you look about 24 hours ago I have asked on both SailorMoon and Sophia the first talked page about adding the missing characters. I already took those steps. I will work on Sophia’s character page with reliable sources. Thank youFedualJapan (talk) 17:11, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bad sources edit

Just putting it out here that it should go without saying that user-generated unattributed websites like nameberry and babynames and whatshouldinamemy baby are not reliable sources. There's general indicia of consensus on this topic, such as at recent discussions at Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_285#BabyNames.com and Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_266#Behindthename.com?, that they're not fully reliable, and if they are based on something we should use that primary source to ref, not self-published open submission websites. JesseRafe (talk) 13:41, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Look, there are multiple sources on the web and in published name dictionaries on my shelves as well that all list Mya as a modern spelling variant of Maya. It is a modern coinage, a phonetic variant spelling of the name, probably influenced by the singer. It is also a very popular girls name, as shown by the popularity chart that is referenced. Behind the Name cites its sources as well for the popularity charts, which are government sites. In any event, Your continued reversions are contested. You are deleting cited material. 17:05, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Bookworm857158367 (talk)
Look, there is no source that Mya is a derived from Maya on the page. The sources that were removed were not RS as detailed above. The article must stay as it was prior to the addition of the disputed content. Your editing is suspiciously aligned with the IP's which you did not dispute, it is also rather sloppy given how old this account is, simple spacing and formatting errors (why two :s on first response?). All the other given variants are notable, ergo they are listed in the See also because there is something to see. There's nothing to see vis-a-vis Mya, it's not notable. If you have good sources that you allege exist on your shelf, by all means, use them! Instead of sourcing garbage user-generated "I think this name sounds pretty" websites. JesseRafe (talk) 17:13, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Any edit I have made is with this account. I don’t edit using IP addresses. And, I shall indeed list the written sources when I have more time. Mya is considered and is in use as a variant of Maya. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 17:55, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
JesseRafe objected to the sources I previously provided that listed Mya as an alternate spelling of the name Maya. I then provided a citation from a more scholarly source, The Oxford Dictionary of First Names, which the editor again reverted, apparently due to objections to the format of said citation and due to simply not liking the edit. This particular source lists Mya as “a modern coinage of uncertain derivation, possibly a respelling of Maya or Mia.” The other book sources I cited earlier also note its increase in popularity due to the singer and usually also list it as a phonetic respelling of Maya, a name that the article notes has a variety of meanings and origins from multiple cultures. This particular version of the name is notable because it, along with other spelling variants, is among the top 300 most popular names for girls in the U.S. It is not just any spelling but one of the more popular spellings of the name. In any event, I am opposed to the removal of the spelling Mya from this article. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 04:34, 7 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
You've still failed to establish consensus for including this non-notable spelling of the name on the list of people named Maya. It's not a notable variant, no one notable has this name (singer/actress uses a diacritic anyway, and it's pseudonymous for the Burmese individual), and it doesn't occur in notable works. If you find consensus in the talk page for inclusion, then it can be included. Without consensus, status quo ante drives the article to maintain the stable version without spurious additions. JesseRafe (talk) 00:26, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Your personal preference does not justify removal of a cited addition for which notability is more than established. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 00:49, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have posted a report on this content dispute on the dispute resolution noticeboard at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 01:27, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have created the article Mya (given name) with a list of notable people with the name but I still believe Mya should be listed in this article as a spelling variant. There are numerous articles on Wikipedia with various people called Mya, far more than just the singer Mya Harrison. Based on the birth dates of some of them and the publication dates of Maya Angelou’s work, I strongly suspect that some of them were named after Angelou and the spelling variant then rose in popularity in the late 1990s after Mya Harrison became better known. Angelou got her nickname from a little brother who called her “mya sister”, a story that was well known and included in the cited text. All of the references I have cited list Mya as a spelling of Maya.Bookworm857158367 (talk) 04:26, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

(edit conflict) Right now it looks like the Oxford Dictionary of First Names is being used to support the inclusion of Mya as a variant of Maya. In my digital version of this publication, the entry on Maya shows only one variant (Maia). It says that the name may be a Latinate version of May. It mentions the phonetic word "mya” (lowercase) only to tell the story mentioned above about how Maya Angelou got her nickname. The source doesn’t seem to be saying that Mya is an alternate form of Maya.

Are there additional sources (other than the problematic ones already discussed)? It seems like posting those sources would be the easiest way to resolve the dispute. A couple of weeks ago, Bookworm857158367 indicated the need for more time to post additional sources, but it seems like posting the sources would take up less time than going through formal dispute resolution procedures. Larry Hockett (Talk) 04:29, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

The edition I have been using is a 2006 edition. Under a separate entry it lists Mya as “a modern coinage of uncertain derivation, possibly a respelling of Maya or Mia.” The 2011 book “1,107 Baby Names That Stand The Test of Time” by Jennifer Griffin lists Mya under Maya as a spelling variant along with Maia and Myah. The book “100,000+ Baby Names” by Bruce Lansky lists Mya as a spelling variant of Maya, which is correctly listed as having multiple language origins and meanings. Mya is also listed as a Burmese name meaning emerald and a spelling variant of Mia in Lansky’s book, both of which are also correct. Mya appears to be pronounced more like most Americans pronounce Mia in some European countries. I’ve also personally met girls named Mia who pronounce the name with a long i and say it’s a Maya variant. I’ve also met a few women named Maia or Maya who pronounce it with a long a. Other books I have also list it as a spelling variant of Maya. As this particular name, Maya, is one that has multiple meanings from multiple cultural origins, there isn’t likely to be any one source for Mya either. It is pronounced as and referred to in sources as a spelling variant of Maya, which also has a lot of origins. The popularity of the singer is listed in some sources as a reason for the increase in usage of the name in the late 1990s. Maya has been among the top 1,000 names in the U.S. since the early 70s and the spelling variant was around at least by 1974, when Mya Baker was named. Angelou’s best known work came out in 1969 and the story about her name was known then too. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 04:49, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

As the dispute resolution has been closed, I will say again that I made a mistake in citing The ISBN numbers, which I have tried to correct. The books, with differing page numbers and corrected ISBN numbers are:

  • Oxford Dictionary of First Names by Patrick Hanks, Kate Hardcastle, and Flavia Hodges, Oxford University Press, 2006, ISBN 0-19-861060-2
  • Bruce Lansky 100,000+ Baby Names: The most helpful, complete, & up-to-date name book Da Capo Lifelong Books; Revised edition (July 9, 2019), ISBN 978-0-306-922985

The spelling variant and its rank in the U.S. naming statistics is also verifiable which i guess takes us back to differences in opinion over what constitutes notability. I still want to add the spelling Mya to the article and I would actually prefer to add all the information from the Mya (given name) article to the Maya article and redirect Mya to Maya. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 16:02, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I added these references to it being a spelling variant and the popularity stats to the article. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 19:49, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
User:JesseRafe has consistently reverted cited additions to this article, has refused to attempt to reach consensus and has made unfounded accusations. Aside from that, the other editor said on a dispute resolution forum that he did not object to the addition of the popularity statistics from the Social Security Administration. He is the only one who appears to object to these additions and will not discuss. That isn’t a good reason to revert cited material. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 20:35, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Request for comment on adding spelling variant Mya to article Maya (given name) edit

Should the spelling variant Mya be added to the article Maya? Bookworm857158367 (talk) 21:26, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please see the above discussion for background on this content dispute. The main question is whether the article should list Mya as a spelling variant. I have provided citations that list it as such, which the other editor objected to due to formatting errors I tried to correct and apparently due to concerns regarding relevance and notability. I tried dispute resolution which was ended without resolving the matter. At this point more input is needed. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 21:31, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Maia, Maya, and Mya are variants. They can be added. Segaton (talk) 21:33, 10 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

These are the three books I had previously listed, along with the corrected ISBN numbers:
  • Oxford Dictionary of First Names by Patrick Hanks, Kate Hardcastle, and Flavia Hodges, Oxford University Press, 2006, ISBN 0-19-861060-2
The entry under “Mya” on page 199 lists it as a “Modern coinage of uncertain derivation, possibly a respelling of Maya or Mia, influenced by Myra.”
  • Bruce Lansky 100,000+ Baby Names: The most helpful, complete, & up-to-date name book Da Capo ::Lifelong Books; Revised edition (July 9, 2019), ISBN 978-0-306-922985
The entry under Maya on page 223 lists Mya as a spelling variant.
  • 1,107 Baby Names that Stand the Test of Time by Jennifer Griffin, Workman Publishing Co., 2011, ISBN: 978-0-7611-8016-6
Mya is listed as a variant of Maya on page 186.

Comment Mya (given name), suggests that this is merely one of several theories - that Mya is a variant of Maya. With the proviso that the disputed nature is noted, there is no reason to not include this as a variant here - though best keep the seperate article IMO, since some Mya names appear to have other origins. Pincrete (talk) 08:11, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think the entry could be so worded. The article already states that the name Maya itself has a lot of meanings and origins in multiple cultures. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 13:19, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
No, the mention in see also section is enough. Are the names sometimes associated with each other? Yes. Are they always related to each other? No. And Mya by itself is noteable enough that it can stand on its own.--Ortizesp (talk) 19:13, 22 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
