Media

Hi! As part of a group project with our Embattled Media: Conflict and War Journalism class, we are working on improving this page. We're thinking about moving the information from the overview into the respective sections on radio, etc., and then adding to the overview information on the overall media climate and press freedom. We'd also like to add additional sections on other types of media. Let us know if you have any ideas! Librowall (talk) 00:16, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Sounds like Georgetown's Embattled Media: Conflict and War Journalism course. Note that the journalist intimidation/violence and press freedom issues are dealt with on the seperate List of journalists killed during the Somali civil war and Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim controversy pages. Press freedom has not really been an issue until recently since, during much of the civil war period, there was no strong central authority or legislation to regulate the media. The focus was instead on re-establishing law and order and public institutions. Consequently, the main communications issue at the time was media being used to convey war-time propaganda and disinformation; this is dealt with on the Propaganda in the War in Somalia page. This page is earmarked for a brief overview and listing of broadcast media types in the country, except for film/cinema, which is discussed on the Cinema of Somalia page. The Communications in Somalia main page provides a broad summary of the various existing communication channels in Somalia, including print, tv, radio, internet, telecommuncations and mail. Thanks for the info! We will try to avoid overlap as we add content. Librowall (talk) 19:26, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Just noticed that anyone can enroll in that "class". I just added my username. lol And there I thought that was an actual Georgetown University classroom with online access. At any rate, what I meant was that that material is outside the page's WP:SCOPE. It is within the scope of and already covered on the first three wiki articles linked to above. Middayexpress (talk) 19:36, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi there! I understand that some of the information that we added on press freedom already exists in the articles you mentioned. We noticed that you have removed the section, is this because of the overlap or were there any problems with the content? Fbahja (talk) 20:24, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
As explained above, it is because this material is outside the WP:SCOPE of this article and is already dealt with on other pages. Middayexpress (talk) 12:54, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
Ok, so I contacted Adel Iskandar through GU and he provided clarification on the matter. I've re-added the material with some contextualization and updates, and corrected a few errors. A lot has transpired in the past few months, including several security sweeps by the authorities and draft consultations between local and international media representatives on a new NUSOJ-led national media law. Middayexpress (talk) 16:05, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for re-adding the Press Freedom section and for your edits. I'm wondering whether we should add anything on the legal framework around press freedom, specifically regarding defamation? We will also be adding information to the separate media outlets (TV, Print and Radio) Fbahja (talk) 01:51, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
The existing media law was passed in 2007 by the former Transitional Federal Parliament, with little input from press representatives. A new media law is now scheduled to replace it, and members of the press are leading the consultations. The bill is intended to be more in line with the recently adopted Provisional Constitution, which guarantees the media many liberties. The constitution has several legal statutes related to the press, including articles on freedom of expression, assembly, movement and occupation, and the right to form trade unions. I've added a note to that effect. Middayexpress (talk) 16:50, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Note that the individual media sections are not set aside for an undue rehash of the press freedom section. They're for discussing the media types available in the country. Universal TV, Royal TV and Somali Channel TV are also not actually based in Somalia, though their broadcasts do reach there, among other places. They are headquartered in London, and are among several such Somali networks which air from abroad. Middayexpress (talk)
Thanks for your input. I'm wondering whether it would be worth mentioning the temporary shut down of Universal TV and Horn Cable TV in Somaliland and Puntland underneath the Press Freedom section? I was able to find a few additional sources on that online, but I agree, it's probably best not to put them under the TV section. As for the networks that are based outside of Somalia, I thought it would be important to mention them since the article is titled media OF somalia, and not media in Somalia. Universal and Horn Cable TV seem to be pretty important. Additionally, we are thinking of adding another section for new media. Since Cinema and Music in Somalia have their own articles, we simply just linked those. But there's quite a bit on social media that pertains more to Al Shabab and the famine crisis in somalia. Would that be considered outside the scope of the article?Fbahja (talk) 22:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Al-Shabaab's social media use is discussed on the outfit's article (assuming you don't already know that). Social media use in Somalia is limited to Twitter and Facebook, and those are obviously not Somalian media or exclusive to Somalia. Universal TV is just one of various Somali-owned networks broadcasting from overseas to Somalia and other places where there are Somali communities. This article focuses on the actual media of Somalia, just as the cuisine of Somalia page focuses on Somalia's actual cuisine. Middayexpress (talk) 13:28, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
