Mars Curse edit

I don't think Mars is the lowest gravity planet, I think that is Mercury. Mars is probably second on the list.

According to NASA, they're tied for surface gravity, Mercury has lowest escape velocity. Not counting Pluto, at least. Peter Grey 21:52, 14 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
What has the low gravity to do with the difficulty of Mars landings? I think this is the very thin atmosphere of Mars, which makes its surface so difficult to reach (intact).--Bricktop 00:36, 15 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Galactic Ghoul edit

How about merging Galactic Ghoul into this article? That one doesn't seem to have much content, and no room for expansion. Coffee 15:59, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I merged the article. Coffee 06:10, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Successful Landers edit

Last I counted, there were 5 successful landers, Spirit, Oportunity, Pathfinder, and the 2 vikings, not 3. Just making sure my math is right Tuvas 18:08, 26 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your math is right. I noticed the same thing before I came to the talk page. I'm a'gonna fix it. Georgewilliamherbert 09:53, 28 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
There was a 6th lander, from the Mars 3 mission.. it didn't last for long, but should still be noted. Mlm42 23:00, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Explanation of curse edit

The placement and condition of Mars may lead to a natural creation of this "curse". While Mars is not as simple a target as, say, an Earth orbit, it seems the easiest to reach of all other planets, so that the elaborate care and very low benchmarks set up for missions to the distant outer, or hot, fast-orbiting inner, planets may not be taken. It is also a relatively low-gravity planet, making a tempting target for landing and ambitious orbital projects, again perhaps overstepping the actual ease its small size implies.

I removed this because it seems to be largely speculation.. perhaps it can be reworded, or sourced? Mlm42 23:05, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merge edit

Actually, I'm planning on merging this article into Exploration of Mars.. i don't think it's important enough to deserve it's own page.. there's not really much to say about it. Mlm42 09:45, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I disagree, but it's certainly worth discussing here to see how others feel about it. Georgewilliamherbert 20:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • So, I don't know much about this Mars curse, and how influential it is.. but it seems to me that there isn't a whole lot to say about it beyond a paragraph or two, which makes me think it probably belongs as a section of a bigger article. it seems especially appropriate on Exploration of Mars because of the new table there that lists all launch attempts to Mars so the reader can see at a glance what the Mars curse theory is based on.
