Pocket Edition edit

The article only mentions the Pocket Edition of Minecraft for Android, but it is also available on iOS as of November 17th, 2011. 67.60.80.6 (talk) 11:28, 21 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Minecraft Release Date edit

Markus has moved the date for Minecraft to be released up one week, to November 18. The page should be changed to correspond with this change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zachman3334 (talkcontribs) 22:05, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

October 2010 edit

Do you not think that Markus Persson, being a person, deserves a page separate from his game? I mean, he has a lot of recognition, mildly famous, a pretty well-known figure. In fact, today I heard his name on three separate occasions from three different people...— Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.112.107.131 (talkcontribs) 23:56, October 14, 2010

As well as this, nobody has written in the 'Games' section that he was a founder of Wurm Online! That's a little more of a large-scale project than some that are listed... --Acra (talk) 13:42, 29 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notability edit

Since notch hasn't really been mentioned outside of articles talking about Minecraft, I doubt his notability outside of the video-game world. I suggest we merge it with the Minecraft article.24.47.43.189 (talk) 10:42, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Although Wikipedia should not predict future, Persson has started his own company and is working on a new game. It is one event, yes and notability is at question. If you strongly feel like merging, you can propose this. The majority of info would be trimmed this way, so storing the article in userspace draft would be then preferred. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 10:57, 23 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I agree with the Wikipedia-is-not-a-crystal-ball thing when it comes to Notch. Merge for now, recreate later. --Newimagekirby (talk) 01:51, 16 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. Although not well known, Markus is a developer of many games and has a notable history within the programming scene. I suggest that though Minecraft was the largest success, it is by no means the only. I disagree with a merge for that reason. --Acra (talk) 13:42, 29 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I also disagree. While he is most famous for Minecraft, that dosn't mean he should be merged with it. For example, Stalin is most well know as a leader of the USSR. He still has his own page. 24.246.127.189 (talk) 15:38, 29 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Edit request from Thefowles1, 31 January 2011 edit

Upon reading how Markus wants to improve and edit the game until completion, I recalled reading a tweet from him about how Minecraft will "probably never be feature complete". It might be worth noting this in the article to show, if anything, how much Markus dedicates his life to the development of this indie sandbox game. Stance on piracy edit

I think it's important to note that Notch still thinks people who pirate are "jerkasses". The current section could give the misconception that he supports piracy, which he does not.

More detailed, or less detailed competition games list? edit

Currently the article refers to "Prelude of the Chambered" and "Breaking the Tower" which are both games he created in competitions. They are listed among the same level as games that he has taken years to make (as opposed to 48 hours as it was with many of the competition games), so I recommend a few possibilities: Creating a new section entitled "Ludum Dare Games" or something similar, and listing all of the known games he created for those competitions, adding all of the games to the original list of games, or removing the competition games from the games list. Opinions? TJFadness (talk) 00:38, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Both Ludum Dare games say they are Ludum Dare games and Minecraft has a "Main article: Minecraft" link. I'm not sure adding another sub-header is needed. I added it anyway with an intro and added Metagun. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 07:07, 30 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Notiriety is a negative thing: "the state of being known for some unfavorable act or quality.". It doesn't make sense in this context

I am a player of Minecraft, however unless this article can be greatly imporved, I think it should be merged with Mojang. Due to the fact that Jens Bergensten also has a merge discussion, I've decided to set up an RfC on Talk:Mojang. Please comment there. Thanks, Nathan2055talk - review 17:23, 29 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Strong oppose - Notch is currently considered one of the most notable and important people in the video game industry today. Not only was he the lead designer of one of the most-popular video game titles in the world, but he has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA, and has been involved with philanthropies and charities that have taken a special interest in him. Either the nominator of this has minimal knowledge of this subject, or they are generalizing over the ambiguous nature of the merger discussion over Jens Bergensten. You might want to reconsider your basis, Nathan2055. DarthBotto talkcont 21:20, 01 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment - I would also like to note that sources are easily obtainable, while regarding Notch. I've done some significant work on the introduction to this article and know for a fact that the page has the potential to be a good article, given the right incentive. 0x10^c edit

While there certainly aren't enough reliable sources to start a Wikipedia article on this topic, it is certainly worth mentioning somewhere in this article that Notch has formally announced the name of his next game that he is working on:

http://0x10c.com/

Finding reliable secondary sources on this topic is going to be difficult for awhile, as it is simply far too early, but I do think something ought to be put into this article mentioning this game and website as it does look like where Notch is going to be spending a fair bit of his time.

Some sources to look at (just as a cursory glance at potential notability to this as a topic):

I think this is enough to at least write a paragraph or two about the topic *within* this article and possibly create the kernel seed for a potential full article if more information actually comes. It does look like it will be a significant effort and major game, unlike some of the "toy" games that Notch has made over the past several months. --Robert Horning (talk) 07:12, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

College, studies? edit

I think this should be mentioned, there is documentation that he went to college but what career?

We don't have the US college system here in Sweden. We have the equivalence to your high school, and after that university studies towards a specific degree (e.g. no minors or majors or unrelated courses, just the degree in itself.) From what I understand he has no degree, so either he didn't complete his degree or he just has a high school education. I've read about him interviewing for a developer where they said they could tell he was self-taught, presumably because he didn't structure his code like a course in software design would have taught him. 85.229.136.83 (talk) 19:18, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Neutral with compromise of Notch (game designer). I would say Notch is indeed the common name; for example, "Notch" is used more than twice more than "Markus Persson" in Google News. Since common name is determined by reliable sources foremost this is a very good indication. Regarding informal sources like forums and whatnot, I don't think there's any doubt to anyone frequenting that "Notch" is the common pseudonym. Now, I don't think it's primary topic though. If you ask a person what "notch" is, they would say it's a V-shaped hole or a mountain pass, not Persson's alias. I would expect better proof that it's the primary topic globally, not just in gaming-related circles. If one googles "notch", first hits are for Persson due to Google's indexing popularity algorithm, but it falls off very quickly into a plethora of unrelated usage. Given all that, I think disambiguating as "Markus Persson" is better than disambiguating as "Notch (game designer)". —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 10:02, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Notch (game designer)Markus Persson – I have to say, renaming this page was a pretty bad move. Not only does the consensus seem ambiguous, but Persson does not explicitly go by the pseudonym "Notch". In fact, most news articles since the genesis of Minecraft's popularity have referred to him by his legal name, with a mention of his pseudonym as a nod to his early anonymity. I think it should be reconsidered, so far as changing the title back. I'm all for editing this page, as you can see from the new introduction, but it's awkward to have his pseudonym being used for prominence; very unenyclopedic for a public name. Correct time stamp. Wait, we use Twitter for primary sources now? Sparklerainbow87 (talk) 15:53, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, Twitter is a primary source almost by definition. As long as you can determine with accuracy who is sending the various tweet messages (usually not too difficult of a task and usually supported through several sources what account name is connected to which real-world people), it can and should be used as a reliable source... but as a primary source following the guidelines at WP:PRIMARY.
In the case of Markus Persson, he chats up a storm and often posts as many as a dozen tweets per day (sometimes as much as about a hundred) where he muses about life, work, and projects he is working on. A great many details of the projects he does have been discussed in Twitter messages to various fans, and for somebody writing a biography of the guy it would be a fantastic repository of information about him including who are his closest associates. Blogs and other similar writings of a person can be seen as a sort of auto-biography.
None of this should be a shock. It is no different than a historian in earlier times using a diary or journal for primary source material, but it does take synthesis and results in other problems of primary sources where a more dispassionate 3rd party or several 3rd party secondary sources digging through all of this information would be better source material for writing a Wikipedia article. --Robert Horning (talk) 18:04, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I feel the primary source tag on his birthplace is a bit of an overreaction. Apart from his medical records / birth certificate, both of which are private, the only way to find his birthplace is directly or indirectly (people he told) from Notch himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaredjeya (talkcontribs) 11:37, 18 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Easy there. Reread WP:PRIMARY. There's nothing inherently wrong with primary sources. They're perfectly acceptable for "straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the source but without further, specialized knowledge." Basic facts like the man's birthdate and wife's name can certainly be supported by primary sources, and as such, I've removed those tags from the infobox. Now, if you have other sources giving different information, those straightforward statements might deserve tagging, but Template:Disputed-inline is the right tag for the job. --BDD (talk) 16:21, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Markus announced via Twitter that he is now single and is no longer with Elin Zetterstrand. Edit to the infobox needs to be made. Maybe an explanation under the Personal Life subsection.

Not done for now: Right now, all we have is one tweet saying he is single at the moment. There is no reliable information on what this means for his personal life at all. If you want an edit to the infobox, please be more specific as to what should be edited (just remove the spouse mention?) and what you want added to the Personal Life section. If you can, try to back it up with a more reliable source. Arda Xi(Talk) 17:19, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Interestingly, Markus even mentions Wikipedia by name as rationale for the announcement. For myself, I think this amounts to WP:FART treatment (one of my favorite essays on Wikipedia at the moment). --Robert Horning (talk) 22:37, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Personal Life. edit

I noticed that people tend to add religious affiliation to Wikipedia pages. Came across an Imgur snapshot of a conversation between Notch & Jeb: http://imgur.com/r/atheism/NKUdy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.20.13 (talk) 05:15, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

That is also subject to WP:PRIMARY and generally needs to be avoided. If his religious viewpoints become something of a topic in a news article that can be considered a reliable source, and by saying it is a topic meaning it isn't just a passing reference but something of substance about that religious affiliation, by all means include that in this article. An interview or something similar is fine too, but again avoid a merely passing reference as his religious affiliation should be at least a major topic in that interview with at least some elaboration on the concept. I don't think this quick exchange on Twitter would count and has a number of other problems other than showing religious bigotry on the part of an anonymous person that Notch just happens to be bringing up at the moment. --Robert Horning (talk) 22:16, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. His religion (or lack of) is not notable unless it is a primary source in which he is known for. This is similar to articles that are under the Category of "American Muslims" or "Canadian Jews," It has no notability unless it is part of what makes them notable. 98.198.85.83 (talk) 10:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Your edit, however, was not a collaborative action of this specific discussion, as the source was not a passing reference on Twitter or a chat log, but was removing a discussion about his donations made in the name of his religious beliefs. DarthBotto talkcont 07:40, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The biography section says he began programming on his father's Commodore 128 home computer at the age of three. The given source for that sentence reads „My father bought a Commodore 128 when I was seven years old, …” and goes on how he started with type-in programs from a magazine then.

Notch's Biography edit

Norstedts published an ebook about Notch's life and the story of Minecraft's creation/"rise to power" in 2012,[2] and it's getting a hardcover English edition from Seven Stories Press later this year.[3] I'm pretty surprised it hasn't been mentioned in this or the main Minecraft article already, but I think this should go in the Biography section.

Edit request -- Add note on reference to him in Skyrim edit

There is a sly reference to Markus and Minecraft in Skyrim. If you climb to the very top of the tallest mountain in Skyrim, the Throat of the World, you will find a unique tool named the "Notched Pickaxe" stuck in the rock. This is an enchanted pickaxe that raises the player's smithing skills, and it alludes to both Markus' nickname and the central role of the pickaxe in Minecraft. 64.251.72.251 (talk) 05:44, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I remember a tweet by Notch about this at the time it was created (by the developers of Skyrim), along with some magazine article talking about this pickaxe. Unfortunately, the wikia references does not qualify as a reliable soruce and you need to find those articles or tweets which reference this item. With the volume of articles and content about Markus Persson, I would be hard pressed to identify the specific source that could collaborate this particular item and its connection to the Minecraft creator. Find the source (and please at least leave a link here in this talk page), and it will be added to the article. --Robert Horning (talk) 05:18, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Would it? Eurogamer GameZone 1UP Game Informer —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 09:22, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Why should it not be added into this article? Seriously? I assume you, Hellknowz, have edited more than a few times on Wikipedia. If you have something meaningful to say about this topic (how to add this bit of trivia) into the article, a more meaningful comment would be much more appreciated rather than sniping from the sidelines and skating very close to a personal attack. --Robert Horning (talk) 13:14, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'll also add, those particular references you listed, while noting the "fan speculation" about the pickaxe (aka rumors and gossip), none of them seem to have anything definitive about the topic and as such doesn't seem to qualify as something worth including into an article. Some deeper digging into sources might be needed rather than a casual Google search. --Robert Horning (talk) 13:22, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Huh? You said it would be hard to find sources, I went and got 4 of them from WP:VG/RS. How is this in any way even close to a personal attack? You said "you need to find those articles or tweets which reference this item" to 64.251 and that's what I replied with. And where have I said this should or shouldn't be included in the article, why do you assume I am against including it?
Anyway, I think Minecraft#Popular_culture_and_social_media is a better place to add it, but it probably should be mentioned very briefly without too many specifics as this is a one-time news event. We can also add a short mention in Markus_Persson#Scrolls if there is consensus. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 09:12, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Piracy edit

"He has criticized both piracy[41][non-primary source needed] as well as the stance of large game companies on piracy[42]". Notch is decidedly in favor of piracy, he actively encourages users to pirate minecraft until they can afford to pay Mojang. http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2012/01/12/minecraft-creator-notch-tells-players-to-pirate-his-game/ http://www.gamefront.com/notch-says-if-you-cant-pay-for-minecraft-pirate-it-and-pay-later/

Edit request on 2 February, 2014 edit

At the end of 2nd paragraph in the "Personal life" section, there's a claim that he's a "bronie" (sic). If this clumsy sentence is to remain, it could be improved by: (a) creating a separate paragraph. (b) clarifying his referal to the "20% cooler" brony meme.

Please consider replacing the sentence with something like the following paragraph, while still including the current links & references for their relevance: "It has been claimed that he is a "brony" (a portmanteau of "bro" and "pony", referring to a male who watches My Little Pony) which he has jokingly denied on Twitter ("there's no proof! Nopony saw me watch thee (sic) episodes in a row the other day!") despite his nod to brony-related memes such as "20% cooler".

Net Worth edit

This article states that the net worth of Markus is $150 million, the citation is a website that has no credibility and appears to have plucked the number out of thin air. The tax returns of Swedish individuals are public, in 2012 alone Markus took home over $100 million in licensing fees for Minecraft [1] and has previously been offered billions of dollars for Minecraft [2]. He is the owner of the Minecraft IP, therefore it stands to reason that his net worth is in the billions of dollars, not $150 million. The number should be removed, or at the very least revised to include publicly available information. Does Wikipedia have any standards for how net worth must be calculated? The minecraft.net used to be much more about Mr. Persson back when Mojang or for that matter Minecraft was just a single person sole proprietorship with no employees. With the expansion of Mojang and then the subsequent sale of that company to Microsoft, it really doesn't have much at all to do with him except as a source of some historical information. The same thing could be said about his appearance on the Craig Ferguson Late Late Show appearance and the rest of the IMDB info so far as it is information that is really good original source material that can be used for this article, but really doesn't have much to do with the topic at the moment. --Robert Horning (talk) 10:19, 31 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Removal of BLP Primary Sources edit

I recommend that the primary sources tag on this article should be removed. Out of 40+ references, only 10 of them are primary sources - clearly the majority are 3rd party.

Robert The Rebuilder (talk) 11:41, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's not about majority, it's about having them at all. Ideally, we want 0 primary sources. We want to replace them with reliable independent secondary sources, or remove them altogether. Twitter posts is something we want to avoid, but so far no one has invested the time to improve the sourcing. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 11:51, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't see why basic primary sources for things like a birth day would be an issue. WP:BLPPRIMARY doesn't seem to forbid them, just the usual cautions plus a few examples about public records that should not be used. Almost all of the primary sources deal with just a couple of basic facts, birth day, place of birth, and twitter handle (which is an important alias that came directly from twitter). -- ferret (talk) 11:57, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Then we need to apply the tag to the article on J. K. Rowling, because it uses over 10 primary sources as references, including her personal blog and tweets. Or, we can agree that it is about majority. Your call. Robert The Rebuilder (talk) 13:52, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, pretty much. It got the FA star way back in 2007, and the standards have increased a lot since then. In fact, at the time of promotion, there weren't many primary sources. Most new ones were added since. —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK 14:45, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
(bump) I didn't check to see how the article was in 2017, but as it stands now, it's all primary sources all the time. Wikipedia:PRIMARYNEWS has some surprising facts: newspaper and magazine stories, such as contemporary accounts, eye-witness reports, investigative reports, interviews, etc., are primary sources. Secondary sources would be those which provide analysis, and are often written long after the fact. So in reality, pretty much all of our BLPs deserve a "{{Primary sources}}" tag. This is affirmed by the documentation for the template. 2600:8800:1880:FC:5604:A6FF:FE38:4B26 (talk) 07:31, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

A couple changes edit

Firstly, this sentence:

Later in June 2017, he tweeted in support of a heterosexual pride day, calling opponents to the idea cunts and suggesting that they should be shot.

I think "cunts" should be in quotation marks. Not having it in quotes might also be technically correct, but I think the inclusion of quotes might make it seem more professional and encyclopedic, and more in line with Wikipedia's style.

This next part I know for sure is wrong:

Persson has been written about extensively by Linus Larsson [sv] and Daniel Goldberg [sv] in Minecraft and Minecraft, Second Edition, the English language translations have been published by Seven Stories Press.

This sentence consists of two separate clauses joined into one without the use of a semicolon, which is definitely incorrect. A semicolon should be used here or it should be made into two separate sentences, such as:

Persson has been written about extensively by Linus Larsson [sv] and Daniel Goldberg [sv] in Minecraft and Minecraft, Second Edition; the English language translations have been published by Seven Stories Press.

OR

Persson has been written about extensively by Linus Larsson [sv] and Daniel Goldberg [sv] in Minecraft and Minecraft, Second Edition. The English language translations have been published by Seven Stories Press.
