Recent edits (Dec 2008)

I have reverted recent edits to the page (again) because they are not encyclopedic. Firstly, the CD release of Despite Straight Lines is NOT a new album, it is a re-release of the album from 1985 with some extra tracks on it. Although (cheekily) labelled as "Despite Straight Lines: The Best of Marilyn", it is by no means a greatest hits compilation, as Marilyn only made one album to begin with. Secondly, a list of cover versions that Marilyn has apparently performed is irrelevant and lacks sources. Thirdly, a list of every single compilation album that Marilyn's singles appeared on from the 1980s onwards is totally irrelevant to this article. This is blatant advertising and the majority of the compilation albums are long since deleted anyway. Save such details for fansites please. And speaking of fansites, TheMrMarilyn.com is a FANSITE (authorised or not) and is actually listed as an "unofficial" site by itself. Such linkage on Wikipedia is inappropriate, as are links to You Tube in order to promote the CD release of the album. Recent edits (Feb 2009)

Cherry Red's 2008 release called Despite Straight Lines: The Very Best Of Marilyn is indeed a greatest hits album. It includes 9 tracks (out of ten!!) of his only album, plus 8 tracks such as b-sides, remixes AND a never released before mix of Raining Again (Dub Version). Milli Vanilli also released ONE album, but they do have a Greatest Hits compilation. See link > Milli Vanilli's Greatest Hits

Regading Marilyn covers/Artists who covered Marilyn: I Ain't Been Licked (originally recorded by Diana Ross) appeared as a b-side on his 1985 single release to Pray For That Sunshine. Spirit In The Sky (originally by Norman Greenbaum), Sooner Or Later (originally recorded by Sylvester James) and Ooh Child (originally recorded by The Stairsteps) came out in 2002/2003 as a three-CD boxset of rare and unheard stuff via his former website. It is a fanclub only release, but it's still worth to mention. The song Give It Up was re-recorded by the artists Eric And The Good Good Feeling. It appeared on their 1989 album called Funky. This album was released through Equinox Phonographic Recordings Ltd on Vinyl/Cassette/CD. Smash 'n' Grab's adaption to Baby U Left Me (In The Cold) named Drive Me Crazy was released in 1998 as a single CD through a label called DanceNet. Same with AJB. It came out as a single CD, and a mix was released throughout a compilation. See link > The Compilation

Marilyn's official website is TheMrMarilyn.com. This site started out as a 'fansite' but soonish became being OFFICIAL!! I suggest to visit his website for any other questions regarding the discographies.

You have rewritten the page with a totally non-encyclopedic biography. The tone, style, and content of the biographical details you added contravene Wikipedia's policies (please read Wikipedia's Manual Of Style and other related articles in the Help section before you add/change content to Wikipedia articles). With reference to the above topics of cover versions and compilation albums that have been raised with you by other users, much of this information is inappropriate for an article about a person. Only notable facts should be included in the article and Wikipedia is not a place to include every single minute detail about a subject (this information is more suited to fansites). And in relation to the subject of fansites, the site you mention above identified itself as a fansite and is therefore not appropriate for a Wikipedia article. In response to the matter of the DSL album vs. "The Best of" album, this is indeed the same product but with a few extra tracks included. Since the extra tracks are not additional hit singles in any way, it can hardly be called a "greatest hits" album any more than the original 1985 release of the album was. You will find that many CD reissues of older albums include extra tracks, but this does not mean that they are "new albums" and this album in particular cannot be treated as such. It is appropriate to use the wording "re-released with additional tracks in 2008 as "DSL: The Best Of...", but not to consider it a new volume of work as this is misleading and therefore unencyclopedic. Just because you have seen this attempted on other Wikipedia articles (such as Milli Vanilli) it is not a reason to do so yourself, and since Marilyn only made one album, it is basically aggrandising him to make it appear that he made more.GoldCoaster (talk) 19:58, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Regarding Marilyn was using his official MySpace blog to ask fans to send money to enable him to buy a new computer. Marilyn's 'official' MySpace site is not the one you are refering to. This site is led by a guy called Lee Williamson and Marilyn did never wrote such a thing as a Blog entry there. Marilyn's only official Myspace page is in fact TheMrMarilyn. Regarding He teamed up with Paul Caplin, with whom he co-wrote "Calling Your Name", "Cry and Be Free", "You Don't Love Me" and several other songs. This information is wrong. 1) The Website has already identified itself as an unofficial fansite and so you just coming on here and saying "Marilyn said its okay" its not evidence to treat as an official one. Basically, anybody could say that, and short of the website being listed on some official release (like an album or single, or mentioned in an interview with a known publication or on television) then there isn't really any way that you can prove what you claim. The same thing goes for your claims about the Myspace pages. It's just your word, and that isn't enough. Since Marilyn isn't really an active pop star anymore, it could be argued that an external link to a website is no longer necessary anyway as there has to be a valid reason to include external links (i.e. - not just for the sake of doing so).

2) Including the picture of Marilyn is fine if it is "free use" or if you are the copyright holder, but there are issues about including pictures of living persons which you should refer to in the HELP section. As for the caption, it was excessive information, which is a general problem you seem to have when it comes to contributing to articles. You include too much information that just isn't necessary or even relevant. The subject of the photo and when it was taken are more than sufficient, though if it was a photo taken on stage, you could then say where the performance was (eg "Marilyn on stage in Japan in 1984" etc). The photo you added was just a candid head and shoulders shot though with no notable background details so it doesn't matter where it was taken.

3) Regarding the info about Marilyn working in LA and his involvement with Paul Caplin, I'm not actually disputing this information, but the article would have been reverted back to include it after your edits yesterday. I actually know that Caplin didn't co-write his second and third singles, but if you dispute the other information and have a reliable sources (a source that is NOT your own website) to back up then you can include this in the article.

Lastly, you have to make yourself aware that Wikipedia is not here to promote Marilyn and you should not treat it as a fanpage where you can simply gush on about him because you're a fan. Obviously, fans of celebrities are free to contribute to Wikipedia, but in some cases they do not know how to be objective. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and its function in this case is to divulge general, notable information about Marilyn and his career (including the good and the bad) because he was once a famous pop star. To Maz112: The site has previously identified itself as a fansite and recently even listed some kind of accolade it allegedly received along the lines of "best unofficial site". Just because you have now splashed "Marilyn Official" all over the front page of it and claim that you are in fact not a fan (when you yourself have already stated above that it was a fansite), this does not mean that it will be classed as official. There is absolutely NO PROOF AT ALL that your site is an official one (and unfortunately, the burden of proof is on you). And as for "Calling Your Name", you need to get your information right. The single reached no.4 in the UK charts as per http://www.everyhit.co.uk and also http://www.chartstats.com/artistinfo.php?id=3961 . Now, CYN: I whish the song reached n°3, I really do, but it didn't, it's that simple. It's been written everywhere in 26 years and 1 incorrect chart on a teenage magazine do NOT change the fact that it got to n°4. Don Was: I added a link to his Wiki page, when telling about Baby U Left Me. One of you guys keep taking it off for some reson. Don Was is a great musician and producer, that had succes with his own band. I think it's important to link him to Baby U Left me, the last of Marilyn's songs to enter the charts, and for which the record company made an effort to provide a great producer like him (who's the most important producer Marilyn had worked with, by the way). Chart table

The chart table for Marilyn's singles is currently far too big. According to Wikipedia Music Standards (WP:MUSTARD), a chart table can include no more than 10 national charts (from 10 different countries) and/or no more than 10 additional charts (such as Billboard R&B, UK Dance Chart, etc). There are currently 17 national charts listed on the table and so 7 of them will have to be deleted. Biography

The complete Biography does not make any sense to me. Boy George claims they were later chased out by a neighbour who tried to break down the front door with an axe because the neighbour was attracted to Marilyn, whom he assumed was a woman and later found out he was a man. Also according to George, Marilyn once attempted to seduce David Bowie at a nightclub venue called "Legends", but was rebuffed. This is more like "I've heard from my friends friend". No words on facts like his role in the 1979 movie "Steppin' Out". No words about his participation in the movies "Breaking Glass" and "The Hunger". He appeared in both as an extra, but was later cutted out during the editing process. And this is just the beginning... This is definitely not a proper biography. This biography starts with the Blitz club; then it goes over to Boy George; then the mentioning of the Eurythmics video (unbelievable!), a long description about the "failure" of his music, and then it goes straight back to Boy George. There's nothing wrong with filling out some details about the rest of Marilyn's life, but any information you add needs to be properly sourced. You should also only include relevant details. Video Section

I have removed this section because it was unencyclopedic and fails to meet Wikipedia's policies about "notability". Aside from his own four videos and Band Aid, the only other notable videos he appeared in were Marianne Faithfull and Eurythmics. He didn't make a cameo in Boy George's "Yes We Can" video, as this was just an animated picture of him - not Marilyn himself.
