Whence the name? edit

Seems logical to have some mention of where the name Marfa comes from.Tmangray 01:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Marfa lights edit

Can the following quote from the article be re-worded?

"Investigations both on foot and by aircraft have failed to discover the source of the lights, and although theoretical explanations abound, they remain a mystery."

Investigations? Uh, okay. Is that weasel wording? Read about this scientific experiment done in 2004 by Physics students from UT Dallas.

http://www.spsnational.org/societynews/utd_sps_report.pdf

In short, they installed a traffic recorder so they knew how many cars drove on highway 67, which is visible from the viewing area. Students camped out in a vehicle parked on highway 67 for the purpose of reporting (by way of radio to the students at the viewing area) everytime a car passed, so those at the viewing area knew WHEN each car was going by. Students in the viewing area saw the "mysterious" lights at the same time the parked vehicle reported being passed by a car. Over the course of a few days they were able to account for the origin of every single Marfa light that they saw from the viewing area. They were all headlights.

Really, the Marfa lights are no "mystery." The article should at the very least reflect that experiments have been done that offer some explanation.

edit - I just realized there is an article on the Marfa Lights that describes and cites the experiment. So that is even more reason to change this weasly crap. It's simply not true that no investigations have given an explanation as to what the Marfa Lights are. NOT TRUE

I want someone to change this! I can't do it because I don't know how to make words into links or citings (e.g. An experiment(1) showed blah blah blah suggesting that the Marfa lights are blah blah blah," with '(1)' being a clickable link to the experiment)

It has been a few weeks since I originally posted here and no one has responded so IN THE MEANTIME I AM DELETING THAT WEASLY PART and if someone has a problem with it then they can properly cite the source (the experiment) or change it back to the deceptive lies.

Does Marfa have a newspaper? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.2.224.105 (talk) 02:27, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Marfa name was correct, and now it's wrong edit

Why was this deleted in December 2011?: ... "Amateur etymologist Barry Popik has shown that Marfa is named after Marfa Strogoff, a character in the Jules Verne novel Michael Strogoff and its theatrical adaptation; the origin was reported in the Galveston Daily News on December 17, 1882, after the Marfa railroad station was established but before Marfa received a post office in 1883." ... The Dostoevsky novel THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV wasn't even printed in English at this time. There is 100% positive contemporary evidence that the name comes from a novel of Jules Verne.

I solved the name of the city--can't I at least get my research work mentioned here, as it had been? Barry (talk) 00:13, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

What is your source for this assertion? Candleabracadabra (talk) 00:21, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

See: http://www.barrypopik.com/index.php/new_york_city/entry/marfa_summary/ ... While I found the definitive 1882 citation, the correct information was known before: ... The Portal to Texas History October 1944, Southwestern Historical Quarterly, pg. 296: MARFA: County seat of Presidio on the Texas & New Orleans Ry., 190 miles southeast of El Paso. On highways 67 and 90. Elevation 4688 ft. Latitude 30 degrees 19’, Longitude 104 degreees 1’. Named by the wife of the Chief Engineer of the Southern Pacific Ry. on tour of inspection in 1881 as railroad construction reached this spot, from the heroine of the Russian novel Michael Strogoff which she was reading at the time. I believe this is the revision you're referring to. The anonymous IP editor at the time removed it because it was unsourced. Probably a better approach for him/her would have been to add a citation needed tag, but no big deal. In this case, this is sort of an issue of WP:NOR, but since there are other sources to back you up and the current source is based on speculation, I went ahead and put it back in there with you and the SHQ as the sources. Hopefully that addresses your concerns. Valid issue to bring up; good find on the research. – Runfellow (talk) 18:18, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Marfa was founded in the early 1880s as a railroad water stop.
