Majha in Pakistani Punjab

Surprisingly someone had narrowed Majha to only Indian Punjab whic actually contains a small portion of historical Majha.The main Majha lies in Pakistani Punjab. --Yahoo 01:52, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

All right. I recognize my mistake. I had always been circumspect that Lahore was part of Majha and that it extended into Pakistan as the Bari Doab. But I wasn't sure. Thank you for correcting the error. Rajatjghai 06:13, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Majha Geography note

The last part of the last paragraph is confusing. Is this a geographical term, or an attempt to personally sign the article?

"Please note that Gujranwala Sialkot Narowal and Sheikhupura disricts of Pakistani Punjab are located in Rachana Doab (Between River Chanab and Ravi) and not to be treated as part of Majha Doab which lies Between River Beas and Ravi and is in Indian Punjab , mostly comprises Gurdaspur Amratsar and part of Lahore (Pakistan) Districts Stp Majeed. Karachi-Pakistan"

Majha is not the name of a doab its a linguistic region where majhaili dialect is spoken it extends to bari and rechna doabs and includes Sheikhupura and parts of Gujranwala. Also, not all of Bari doab is Majha, districts to the south of Kasur district are not considered part of Majha. Thats how its always been. After the Partition of Punjab due ot political divisions its assumed by many with little knowledge of linguistics especially on th Pakistani side where Punjabi is not the official language and linguistic study of Punjabi is very limited, that Majha is bounded by Ravi and Beas. The same mistake is made with regards to Malwa as people often extend its boundaries to include all of Punjab south-east of the Sutlej, where as Majha is west of the Grand Trunk road(the old caravan route) and south and east of Sutlej. The region to the east of GT Road upto Ambala district is Puadh, and the dialect is Puadhi which is spoken in Ropar, eastern half of Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rajpura teshil of Patiala and Ambala —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.145.76.44 (talk) 02:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

There is no Majha region in Pakistani Punjab

There is no region officially or even informally called "Majha" on Pakistani side of Punjab. The areas of Pakistani Punjab near the indian Punjab border like Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Kasoor, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad,Faisalabad, Okara etc. are called "Wasti Punjab" in local official documents, media and literature. The "Wasti Punjab"'s translation in English would be "Central Punjab". Sometimes Pakistani Punjab is divided into only two regions namely Saraiki speaking South Punjab region and the rest of the areas is simply called Northern Punjab which in this case includes both Wasti Punjab as well as Pothohar plateau. There is literally no such thing as Majha in the context of Pakistani Punjab, neither in formal context nor in informal context. 77.6.14.140 (talk) 19:52, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
