Untitled

Something about the Two-headed Giant format PT in the 2007 season (and possibly future seasons) might be appropriate. There's some stuff in there about the Team Limited format, which wasn't used this year. --PeterCooperJr 20:58, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Changes

This article needs to be updated to reflect the changes in competitive Magic. It should be renamed as well since there's no such thing as the Pro Tour anymore. Tris7 (talk) 03:51, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

Potential Edits to Content

As far as the suggestion made by User:Tris7, I'd argue that this article should now be a sort of legacy article, and a new page should be made for the new Players Tour competition. First, I plan to merge the Format and Tournament structure sections into a single "Competition Format" section. Next, I want to edit the lead so it reflects the fact that the Pro-Tour is not the current scheme of competition in MTG, as well as editing throughout the page to reflect this overhaul. Additionally, the Player of the Year sections need to be updated, and I will also place all of these within the same section separated by sub-headings. I want to remove the Most successful countries section because it does not seem relevant, and it was just pasted in from a different article. Finally, the graphs need a facelift, as well as adding an MTG logo or logo used for the Pro Tours.

Further thoughts on Major Edits

Upon reconsideration, I believe purpose of the revamp of this article should be to recreate it into the "Players Tour" wikipedia page instead of the "Pro Tour" wikipedia page. I don't believe it would make sense to separate the two, as other pages like "NFL playoffs" keep their legacy formats on the article. Wrapping up

I have made a large amount of edits, and reformed the page to cater to the new Players Tour structure. I have edited every section, updated and checked all of the citation links, updated the top players graph, and attempted to ensure all outdated information is relocated to the "History" section, or otherwise marked as out of date. I am now reaching out to invite User:IlGreven, User:Myoglobin, and User:Jonadrews to take a look at this updated article. I found you all on the MTG Wiki Project user page, and you seem to be active. I hope you can find some time soon to check my work.

One thing I want to direct those checking this page to are the first two sources. They seem to be blog posts from a MTG executive, and do work as used, but I believe they are considered primary sources. If anyone can find a secondary source for these, please update these links. Good thing you are tackling all of this, thanks! Wouldn't it make more sense to put the whole article in the past tense, though? Reading this it all sounds an awful lot like there is still such a thing as the Pro Tour/Players Tour, however there is not really anything like it anymore, only a couple of league statuses that are going to be abandoned when all the legacy commitments have worn off. After that there will supposedly be only a tournament based structure, no league or tour as such.

Also considering that the PT is a thing of the past now, I would think it much more sensible to call the article Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour. The name Players Tour was only something that was there for about a year at the end of the thing, but for more than 20 years its official name was the Pro Tour and everybody called it that. People are still calling for the return of 'The Pro Tour' but nobody ever calls it the Players Tour really. OdinFK (talk) 09:20, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for the reply and clearing that up. I had understood that the Players Tour is an active form of play. Before I edit the tense and structure to acknowledge that this is historical, I just want to confirm that the Players Tour is no longer running. Everywhere I have looked makes it seem as if the Players tour is a current venue for MTG. A google search shows me that there is a 22-23 PT season, and the leaderboard for PT wins on the MTG official site was updated to reflect tournaments up to DEC 9, 2021. Well, the leaderboard is updated for the Rivals and the Pro League. That's what I meant above. These are leagues that are scheduled to phase out, but Wizards is honoring promises they made, so these leagues qualify for the World Championship, which is the reason to keep track of results. On magic.gg I can't see Players Tour mentioned anywhere, and usually being up to date with these things, I would really have missed something big if it was still around or had been reintroduced.

Also if you check out this announcement which is the basis for this article named Players Tour 2022-23, there is no mentioning of the name 'Players Tour' anywhere in the original source. Wizards wants to keep running tournaments after the pandemic and apparently events are going to be organized into seasons (again presumably for World Championship qualification purposes), but that's it. I appreciate the timely response, and the links help a lot. I'll go back in the next couple days and address this in the article - I'll update the text, and will move back into a "Pro Tour" page. It appears as if Wizards have alluded to a possibility for a new form of tournament play, so I will establish this article as the history of the "Pro Tour." They have not only alluded to a new form of tournament play, just yesterday they did the announcing and upcoming announcement thing. So apparently on March 31 we are getting an announcement on what Magic pro play/competitive play is going to look like in the future. We got an update on competitive Magic indeed and it turns rumours of the demise of the Pro Tour were greatly exaggerated, or to be more precise, Wizards has announced that they will bring the Pro Tour back under that very name in 2023.
