Macmillan Nurse

We need to explain the term 'Macmillan nurse' since many people will have met one. My understanding is that they are found on the staff of the larger UK hospitals to provide support to patients and their relatives who are undergoing cancer treatment. However, it's my present understanding that some/many of these nurse-specialists are no longer funded by the Macmillan charity, but use the title to identify their support function. Douglas Macmillan

Macmillan nurses

Macmillan nurses assess complex needs, give advice to other healthcare professionals and support people with cancer to understand their treatment options. They are trained in pain and symptom management, and psychological support. Macmillan nurses specialise in cancer types or treatments including chemotherapy, breast cancer, paediatric care and palliative care . Macmillan lead nurses are senior nurse managers, helping shape the future of cancer and palliative care services in their area .

As of June 2013, there were 3,942 Macmillan nurse posts across the UK, both in hospitals and in the community. Macmillan nurses must have five years’ experience, with two years of more spent in cancer or palliative support. Apart from the nurses working on the Macmillan Support Line, most Macmillan nurses are employed by other organisations, for example the NHS, and their posts are funded by Macmillan for a set time. The NHS, or other partner organisations, then take on the long-term funding although the nurse continues to be called a Macmillan Nurse. The nurse will still be supported by Macmillan including through provision of funds for their education and development.

Thanks Johnbod This has been rewritten, trimmed and now incorporates more links and citations.

 Not done Nothing changed for now. Portions of this are still copy/pasted from the Macmillan site. Also citations from the organization which is the topic of the article are discouraged (though sometimes necessary). Any chance Macmillan nurses have been discussed in some independent source? Maybe a news article or academic article about UK health? Thank you for your contributions; I'm happy to discuss this further. Ajpolino (talk) 16:10, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
